Hi,
Sorry to barge in.I have tried all flavours of Linux.PC LINUX OS is good
but Ubuntu and Mint are hassle free.Suggest you try Ubuntu 11.10 which has
facility WUBI for installation into Windows. The later 12.04 presents some
problems so stick to 11.10 which is very GUI friendly and adapts to all
manner of hardware.Even the latest SKYPE for Linux
can be operated from it.Good Luck and good "Linuxing"

Do not advertize other distros here. We do not do that to you.

Not really; PCLinuxOS was a fork od Mandrake, which later chaged name to Mandriva. Different name, same OS.

Ron.

Not the same OS. While Texstar packaged for then Mandriva, which he then forked, PCLinuxOS maintains its own basesystem, kernel and toolchain. PCLinuxOS borrows the best from several distros while at the same time maintaining its own distinct repository. There may be similarities but never exactly the same.
The PCC may look remotely similar to MCC but this doesn't mean it is exactly Mandriva. Mandriva does not use Synaptic for its package manager.
Each distro has its own merits and shortcomings, PCLinuxOS is not an exception. We also do not tolerate trolls. Even if posters did not mean any harm, THINK first. We do not want to moderate this mailing list but we will not hesitate to remove any offenders and trolls.

No, but it is a lie to say it was developped independently, since it was a fork from an earlier distro.
> We also do not tolerate trolls.
Dont worry, I shall troll no more; as you can see from the CC I am leaving. PSLinuxos was one of the distributions I tried when Mandriva went commercial; Sorry, I finally found Mageia suited me better.
Cheers,
Ron.
PS do you still use the draxtools from Mandrake ?

Not what was said. "PCLinuxOS *is* independently developed." Present tense
= *is.* Past tense = *was*.
Texstar maintained an unofficial repository for mandrake/mandriva years
ago. He forked off from it and created PCLinuxOS. Again, that was years
ago.
It is incorrect to assume that forking off to create the first test release
means that PCLinuxOS is and forever will be no more than a fork. - We left
that long ago.
We are an independent distro. As Archie said, "PCLinuxOS maintains its own
basesystem, kernel and toolchain. PCLinuxOS borrows the best from several
distros while at the same time maintaining its own distinct repository." We
use what works, whatever its origin and make modifications where needed. We
also have our own unique applications, created and maintained by our own
people.
All of the above, plus much more can be easily found with just a little
searching. The assumption that what was the case circa 2004 is the
situation in perpetuity shows a lack of research. Research can expose the
falseness of assumptions.

I made an effort to help you. The problem lies in the different drivers needed for so many different video cards , network cards and using special wrappers to install windows based drivers for network cards such as yours.
Based on what you wrote, it sounds like the only way you could log in was in root.
Thus for some reason your video card was not loading your graphical desktop.
It sounds like all you did was find someone who installed Ubuntu successfully on your specific laptop, for which I'm happy you were able to do.
