Well, in my experience, it took me a while to realize I was “hearing voices”
. They never sounded outside of myself, but I noticed something that had
never occurred to me before: The difference between my thoughts and “the
other thoughts” is this. When I’m thinking – even when I’m puzzling
something out or arguing with myself – there is a core point of my
consciousness that is aware of manufacturing all the thoughts I have. I may
not know what they are until I have them, but there is an organic feeling to
them: these came from my brain. The “other thoughts”, however, do not have
that comfort zone. They seemed completely alien and as if they were
springing from an entirely separate mind. Therefore, there was no feeling of
safety for me. When the self-destructive orders or highly self-denigrating
thoughts would appear, there was no sense that I had anything at all to do
with them.
I’ll be interested to see how it can be for other people.
