Since event registration opened up, I figured many of you that might be attending probably already have snagged your event tickets. I was wondering if any of you might have actually signed up for the same event on the off chance that I might actually bump into you at Indy this year. If so, let me know!

I am GMing at Gen Con. 7 slots. As such, I'm not going to be playing anything so I'll have time to rest a little and explore the convention. Never been before, so figured running 7 games to get a free pass would be worth it. Also getting nifty shirts (OMG PURPLE*!!!) and a Sylph character.

Thursday, August 15

Slot 3 (1900-2400): #5-01: The Glass River Rescue

Friday, August 16

Slot 4 (0800-1300): #4-14: My Enemy's Enemy

Slot 5 (1300-1800): #4-14: My Enemy's Enemy

Slot 6 (1900-2400): Gen Con Season 5 Special: Siege of Diamond City 1-5 (Which you are playing in! May see you at my table!)

Saturday, August 17

Slot 8 (1300-1800): #4-14: My Enemy's Enemy

Slot 9 (1900-2400): #5-01: The Glass River Rescue

Sunday,  August 18

Slot 10 (0900-1400): #4-23: Rivalry's End

* Nothing wrong with purple. It's the colour of royalty. Which just sort of fits my name (Sior is pronounced as "sire", backwards I believe is a French word for "kings", and my first name's etymology means "crowned one"). (Though my middle name means "humble servant". Maybe that's why I GM so much?)

Well if nothing else, it would nice to meet some of my fellow online gamers in the flesh. Perhaps we can all meet up after the Special? Have a drink or snag some evening munchies?

I have an 10am game so timing would be good and I'll need to wind down some from the days activity. Maybe try the Gencon specialty beer this year and hope it is better then lasts hehe. We can get things figured out when we get closer to the event. Anyone else interested that is attending?

There's usually a contingent of Paizonian HQ Staff and GMs and Board Personalities that wander off and fail to cause trouble.

Failing to cause trouble because, y'know, guy in charge was a cop and doesn't want trouble.

I guess I'm the only player so far mixing up the game systems. I get plenty of PFS action through the year so I guess I don't see the appeal of the full on overload (I use local Cons for that). Where I really have to tip my hat is to you guys running games the whole time; sounds exhausting lol.

My reasoning was this:

1 - snag the gen con only stuff, hoping for weird race unlocks or whatever.  that may be totally naive, but hey ive only been in PFS 3 weeks now, i have no idea how gen con pfs works.
2 - snag the season 5 stuff because i am a ROLEPLAY/LORE WHORE and i want in on the ground floor.  I plan on bringing a voice recorder and trying to get permission to record some stuff.  not to distribute or punlish, just to type up as personal notes later so i can get involved in all of the year-long drama they have planned for us!  If not, i will be madly scribbling notes and ignoring the fights haha.
3 - The fact that all 4 of the Blak-something museum events were being run made me *really* want to do all 4 at con with the same character!  Sadly i got part 1 and 4, missing 2 and 3 =/
4 - the upside to those selling out was i get to do another i wanted to do, the season 4-EX that can only be run by very experienced GMs.  I was able to squeeze that in after 2 of the museum ones filled up, so thats a plus.
5 - i added kalkimadese or whatever just in a mad rush, someone in voice comms said it was a good one

but i had a huge urge to do anything gamma world or savage world related, especially as they are new to me and gen con would be a great place to do them.  Alas, i was already stumped when i tried to take my list of the 12 events i wanted and saw there were only ten slots haha!

GenCon specialty beer?  Is that something The Ram has always done?  I don't understand how I didn't know that and try it/them when I gamed there.  When do they unveil it?  I may have only played 'pre-GenCon' games at The Ram, so that might explain why I never knew.

I miss going to conventions. :(

I've been going to Gen Con for 20+ years.  Friends and I have been more interested in board games since the mid 90's, so I haven't registered for events in a long time.  The NASCRAG events were always fun, if you enjoy more role-play and puzzles and less hack-n-slash.  I noticed they're using the Pathfinder ruleset now.

The We Be Goblins! events filled up very quickly.  It's a shame they had so few tables available, as I would have liked the opportunity to walk into that event with some friends.  I played Bonekeep level 1 in Denver earlier this year, so I hope they offer level 2 there again.  I signed up for Siege of the Diamond City and two older Season 2 and 3 scenarios.  I wanted to save the newer scenarios to play locally.

Another fun event to try at least once is Tracy Hickman's Killer Breakfast.  I haven't been to that in ages, but the room full of people are each level one characters who get killed off one-by-one.

is there a policy on backpacks?  i mean i assume i can just bring a folder with the front secure waterstamped front page of the PDFs i own in a 'proof of purchase' folder, but im assuming ill need to bring all the hardbacks i bought but dont have pdfs for.  not to mention, oh characters, folders, die, paper.

Is there an official or unofficial rule about tossing in a bottle or two of water and some snacks?  I have to eat every couple hours for blood sugar reasons, and places that demand i buy all food on premises can get really frustrating... especially if you are trying to do 10/10 like i am heh

No issues with backpacks.

Paizo provided 2 bottles of water per slot to GMs last year.

Speaking from experience, your shoulders will thank you for the $10/hardcover to replace those with PDF.

I'm glad that I only have two different scenarios per day this year - I'll be able to go with a VERY easy "basic load" per day.

You'll feel more out of place if you don't have a backpack.  I think it is a requirement as a gamer.  You should be good to take snacks too.

People's event schedules seem so full.  Do you skip out on the exhibit hall?  Every year, I look back on the convention book and find something I missed out on.

My first year there I did nothing but wander the exhibit hall, take pictures, and just absorb.

While I do mostly games now, I still find time to explore the exhibit hall some and to atleast pick up a few odds and ends. The longer you stay out of the hall though the more money you will have in your wallet :)

I found that the exhibit hall really did very little for me. I like the social aspect of GMing a ton of different players for PFS a whole lot more than going wandering in the exhibit hall.

I'm GMing all the non-banquet slots of PaizoCon, split between PFS and Kobold Press if the schedule comes through....

speaking of hardcovers, obv i will bring core rules.  not only do i not have a pdf of that, but i want a hardback with me.

other than that, i want all pdfs on laptop, not physical, if possible.

If all the pdfs are on my laptop, as far as proving i own something (other than letting the GM look at my screen) i was thinking of printing off just the signed/secure title page of every PDF i own and putting it in a folder called "Proofs of Purchase'.  the actual full pdfs would be on my lappy in case i needed to look stuff up - im mostly just concerned with proving i own stuff for sanctioned play requirements.

Do you think that would be acceptable?  surely they wont make me bring the entire 64page PDF printed out just because i use a weapon string from page 12 or whatever.

Does the folder of front (signed/secured) pages sound like a good idea?

Second topic - do they have public wifi for this laptop concept, or will i need to copy my entire google drive to local HD on my lappy?

thanks gang!  getting stoked!!

matt

The issue is not proof of purchase, the issue is the GM being able to reference the actual published rule if they are trying to adjudicate something.

The proof of purchase function is a handy side effect of the requirement.

Public wifi is spotty as there are thousands of gamers all trying to get connections.... And most of the hotels are charge for access.

Printing just the relevant pages of the PDF and/or photocopying the relevant hardcover pages, and putting them with your PC that uses the content is the best plan I've heard.

I don't have time in a 5 hour slot to do a book policing audit on 6 players, do the convention paperwork, and run Storval Stairs and show people a good time.

I particularly don't have time to do that for a timed event like Bonekeep or Runecarved Key, and I suspect the same will be true of Diamond City.

plus you have to think if someone was gonna cheat at a table, they a) would probably not choose GEN CON to do it and b) in my experience its the *players* next to the cheater who are the first to call Malarkey when another player's gunslinger has $200 worth of Feats, supplements, and gear guides used on his character... stuff that they wanted for their gunslinger but couldnt afford LOL

Of course it doesn't.  And Paizo would like to affirm that decision as well.  And did you know there's another eight gazillion dollars worth of material coming out before GenCon? ;)

i heard if you GM enough you get a Sylph unlock, unconfirmed.  im gonna be all over volunteering when they ask for 2014 9 i was told to wait until jan or feb to look for the signup)

Frankly the best thing that happened to paizo was me googling for a jpg/pdf of *one* map from *one* module i already owned (but no pdf, print).  i wanted to blow it up and print it out in sections for miniatures on a table top.  At this point i had spent $10 or whatever to explore core rules, I think $15 on the module, and I know there was some 3rd thing for like $10.

First google hit - some guy (since taken down i believe) who had every single pdf up until feb 2013 in an illegally shared pdf.  I didnt download but started to browse.  i saw wuality, depth, lots of roleplay material, great writing, and most of all, an already established catalog.  i am not gonna buy 'gnomes of golarion' if i dont also know the other racial books are available too, so in that way im lucky i am just this year getting into pathfinder.  so when i saw not only quality, but DEPTH of a rich game world already flushed out with all kinds of expansions, it sold me on buying an expansion or two.  which led to more.  then... a lot more.  the, hey why dont i run rise of the runelord for my old gaming group in March.  Whats this $200 editionj all about??!?

Paizo made an absolute fortune off of whomever that guy was that basically conned me into dropping a boatload of money.

If i hadnt already seen that the world of golarion had a zillion supplements for all the races and countries *already done*, i wouldnt have gotten into it.  WAY into it.  Ive been burned so many times (shadow run, gamma world about 4 different times) when you buy product #1 of a new game world, of an estimated 20 products, and they discontinue the line after #2.

that thiefs website basically convinced me not of the quality of the products, but that my money was a safe investment - golarion wasnt going to shrivel up and die on me just as i bought into it.

If you go back in the Paizo Blog a little, you will see the call for GMs and what GMing has to offer. There are different rewards depending on how many slots you GM. I'm doing 7 out of 10, so I get a weekend pass to the con, a race boon (offered a selection, but I'm choosing Sylph. With enough tables, one could get a grippli), a book, volunteer t-shirts, some Paizo store credit, and 7 opportunities to be the asshat everyone gets to kill at the end of the scenario. Not to mention all tables run count towards GM stars on the Paizo boards.

As said, check the blog and you'll see everything offered. Sure I missed some stuff. Haha.

Yep, it is listed in the Tiers and Rewards for GMing towards the bottom of the page in their official "Call to Arms" announcement:

A $10 per slot voucher for Paizo.com credit, useable at the show or anytime after, including with your subscriptions

The Race Boon is also listed there for GMs running at least one slot:

A special Pathfinder Society boon that gives you the option to create a character from one of the following races: ifrit, oread, sylph, or undine.
