I am just curious of some history here. It has been explained to me
that there was a wet/dry vote not long ago (not sure when, but I am
guessing within the last 8-10 years). And the vote was dry, but I
have heard that there were some issues about how people were notified
of the voting taken place or something of the fact. If anyone has any
information regarding any of this, I would be very interested in
hearing.. Just curious, like I mentioned.

Wow, so the only vote was in 1966? That was the last time it came
up? I had no idea, I thought it was rather recent. Thanks for
linking me to those....

You are more than welcome to re-form the wet/dry committee.
I can provide contact info for the members.

Is the committee not in existence any longer?

We have the map from the city here if someone needs it.

I tried contacting the person that was heading up this committee
several months ago, but never received a response.

I'll be happy to help with the resurgence :o)

I believe when we were faced with the idea of an entirely new petition drive over a really enlarged new voter precincts area..... the whole thing died on the vine. There really was not a good reason for people to commit, as it looked like no one was interested in a whole lot of effort when any restaurant could try the "private club" route if they truly wished.

I've been told more than once that there are ways around the whole thing under that new law - with considerable effort on the part of the applicant.

If I were a business owner and was told that in order to serve beer/
wine in my restaurant, I would have to do so as a "private club", I
would look for real estate elsewhere. We should be looking for ways to
make it easier for new businesses, not creating more barriers to
entry.

I guess I wasn't aware of the new enlarged voter areas that would need
to sign off - I thought the issue was trying to identify the areas
that voted in 1966 and target those for signing the petition.

As this committee is completely separate from the PHNA, anyone is free
to join and/or re-form the committee.
I believe that Bennie would be willing to provide all the research
that she has put together. (Thanks Bennie for your hard work)
I started up the previous committee, but had some personal issues come
up that kept me from following through.
If anyone is interested, I can provide contact info for those
neighbors that were working on this. (unless they tell me that they
are no longer interested)
There is a lot of interest in making JFK wet again, but there is also
some decent as well.

The basic fact is that we can have "By the glass" establishments on
The Hill, but no package stores.
Also, beer won't be able to be sold at the quickstops because of their
closeness to either churches or schools.
Those are the facts, and also the interpretation of the City Attorney.

A petition drive will have to be completed and processed by the city
in order to allow for it to be put on the next ballot.

We really could use a couple of nice restaurants in walking distance.
Anyone up for darts or skittles?

The colored areas overlaid over the old election boundary in blue.  As we were instructed, if any of the old area overlapped a current election boundary, we would have to get signatures from enough registered voters to cover I recall a little over 30% of the last election (Obama) total.

That was enough to burst most balloons.  I have copied a snapshot here.  If it does not send correctly, I will send out the Adobe file, but it’s rather large.

Thanks Bennie! You wouldn't happen to recall who gave us the
information on this 30% needed from the overlap boundaries?

I believe that any petition drive has to follow the same state law.

It's 38%

http://www.siftingsherald.com/news/x1886187235/Group-seeking-to-get-wet-dry-issue-on-2010-ballot-spokesman-says-some-procedures-have-changed

This was nearly impossible before the voter roles were updated in recent years and perhaps irrelevant, or at least not worth the effort, to PH given the alternative avenues

The real issues are perception & recruitment, IMO.

There is a perception that there isn't another avenue (look at how Adylottes never got over the thought that one must buy a membership, however moderately priced - this is their statement, not mine)

and the fact that there's no one to recruit a small-ish restaurant where one could have a relaxing beverage with a meal.  Why deal with the hassle when there are other options?

There are a few spots that would make fine homes to such an establishment, I believe.  For example the empty bays of the strip mall next to Mapco on D & JFK and a large empty historic building a couple of doors down from Park Hill Home.

Do these places have grease traps or space for a commercial kitchen?  I have no idea.  Such information is what is needed should even passive recruitment via the web or a brochure take place.

For the record, the neighborhood association takes no formal stance on this issue as it is the single issue that's broken up previous incarnations of an association in PH rather, these are just talking points for what I think is an interesting discussion.
