Have most people found that it is not necessary to attach an external
antenna in order for the Pandaboard to maintain a solid wifi
connection?
I read about a soldering procedure for attaching an external antenna
but my Pandaboard ES looks like it has a tiny antenna plug all ready
to go.

Hi,
I've got both the standard pandaboard and the ES, first without antenna and the second with an antenna soldered. While you won't face any real problems in the panda is close to the wifi spot, I'd recommend soldering the antenna. It is quite easy to do and you'll get more range for sure, specially if you enclose the panda in a box (as I did in both of them).
