I'd like to install debian on my Panda rather than ubuntu. It looks
like Robert Nelson's netinstall script is supposed to work with panda,
but I've had no luck.

http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardDebian

Has anybody tried this successfully. The script looks like it builds
the SD card, and then booting from the SD card appears to go well too,
for awhile. But it ultimately hangs (see below). Any advice would be
welcome.

Thanks.

Okay, everything looks better now then compared with your previous
email. It now loaded mlo/u-boot, so what was the solution to the
problem you were having in your original email to me? Still what
version of my script are you using.. ( ( i really need to add that
info to the boot.scr by default.. ;) ) Please do a "git pull" as i've
switched to a 2.6.38-rc kernel by default for the panda, instead of
2.6.37..

This 'hang' looks weird, at this point the serial terminal would
switch to an emulated debian-installer gui.. (always looks weird over
the serial port.) What serial program are you using? I've only
really tested it with gtkterm..

Seems some usb hard drives don't work. I was using an older Western Digital Passport drive. Switching to a different drive allowed the installation to progress.

The script is about a week old. I'll update tomorrow and try that.

I use minicom on debian testing. It's always worked well for me using your script on my beagle. I'll report back what I find with the new installer tomorrow.

Thanks.

I am actually running Debian Wheezy on the Panda installed via debootstrap and custom 2.6.38 kernel. The base install is right at 300MB. It would be nice if we had an "Other Distribution" link on the wiki as I know Debian, Gentoo and Fedora developers have successfully builds for pandaboard.

One more piece of information. I've run the validation test suite

http://www.pandaboard.org/node/13531/#rma

and have installed ubuntu using the same setup as with the debian
netinstall script, so the board appears to work in other situations.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help debug.

After updating the netinstall script, booting goes further, but still
dies before making it to the debian installer.

When the line

Starting system log daemon: syslogd, klogd.

appeared, that's when the panada board delivered power to my bus-
powered hard drive. Power lasted for just a few seconds and then cut
off. I then tried installing with a non-bus-powered hub, but progress
went no further.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ted

Yeah, right now using debootstrap/rootstock is the only method to dump
a straight wheezy/testing..

Well till they push a wheezy initrd.gz for us to use here:
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/wheezy/main/installer-armel/
(the one in their now is just a copy of squeeze..)

We found out on the ubuntu beagleboard elinux wiki, that a lot of
users had a hard time with debootstrap/rootstock, hence all the demo
images and netinstall scripts on there now..

I'm personally really interested in the wheezy armhf port, so I
probably won't bother with the wheezy armel stuff. ;)

Hi Ted,

(crap messed up the CC.. )

Trying to replicate this as closely as possible.. It's currently
installing for me to a usb stick over the serial option.. I also have
a couple usb based harddrives, for reference, which one are you using?

All,

Please feel free to update OMAPpedia distro section with any other
Linux ports.
Tamplate: http://www.omappedia.org/wiki/Template:OMAPpedia/OMAP_distribution

We ask that you include detail information on building and setting up
these different Linux ports. Also if anyone has some videos of their
ports working please post a link.

Thanks
orbarron

Today I updated the netinstall scripts and tried again.

sudo ./mk_mmc.sh --mmc /dev/sdb --uboot panda --distro squeeze --
serial-mode --firmware --usb-rootfs

works without a hitch, but then on both my Toshiba and IOGear bus
powered hard drives and my SanDisk memory stick it hangs at the same
place, here:

If you're having no trouble, I wonder if I have a bum board.

Hi Ted,

I just pushed an updated kernel, can you give a it another try..

I'm wondering if we are missing a setting for those usb drives.. Can
you install it to the mmc card, and then plug in the drives after it's
booted up with the complete install? If they do come up, what does
"lsmod" show..

then hang. This after "git pull" and

sudo ./mk_mmc.sh --mmc /dev/sdb --uboot panda --distro squeeze --

with nothing plugged into usb. Also tried a second SD card and without
--firmware with no luck.

I'm going to request an RMA.

I ended up not getting an RMA since everything but debian seemed to
work as expected.

I tried Robert's install script today, hoping that changes in the last
month would make a difference, and voila, they did.

I successfully install Debian Squeeze today without a hitch. Thanks
Robert!
