Greetings All,

i'd like to get some feedback on a PandaBoard variation being considered. this will be PandaBoard-NC (no connectors):

all the major connectors will be removed in favor of 0.1" headers.

please provide feedback on this thread.....

thanks
Dave

No headers with clean masked ready to solder tinned vias?
or
With headers already installed (this limits bottom side headers)?

It might make adding a multitude of shield personality boards possible
but at the risk of limiting air flow.

For those that wish to develop on the current header rich
board and then deploy a thin product this might make sense.

Not high on my personal wish list but interesting.

current thinking is to leave the headers un-populated so you can configure it any way you want.....

there are so many possible combinations of LVDS that can be implemented, we were thinking it would be best to just leave it open to as much customization as possible by the end user.....

Hello Dave,

I would be concerned with the lack of wifi as the diagram shows. Other than that the board would be great for rolling out DIY hand held units with a LVDS connector. Why not replace the DVI out with LVDS for LCD connections or are more people using the DSI connector now?

Brian

brian,

veriscite has minimum quantity requirements as well as the fact that the SoM requires a base board to operate.....

in reference to the LVDS, there are about 10 LVDS modules available currently for pandaboard, including the animal lvds from tincantools....

Chalkboard electronics already has a decent board for that anyway at a reasonable cost. The need for a second screen header is somewhat unnecessary when looking at portable electronics.

But if you want small and limited space why not use the Variscite board:

Zero connector headers?

Mostly anthing is fine, but leaving even the rj45 for ethernet out is bummer... if there's three plugs that have to be there, then its power, sd, ethernet.

Leto,

rj45 adds a considerable Z height to the board. you don't think it would be good to have pads for a standard magjack?

or maybe the pads for the breakout board so you can just drop it in place?

Howdy Dave,

Granted, it adds Z. Not sure if its really more than 2 or 3mm higher than the barrel power connector, but of course if its an issue, then...

That sounds like the possible way to go.. make it at least compatible with a standard jack $AVERAGEJOE can get for a $LITTLECASH, otherwise it would render ethernet mostly worthless IMHO - at least for the targeted audience.

It would make my FPGA board easier to plug in, since I screwed up and did not mirror-reverse the expansion-header pins for mounting on the underside of the Panda.  (It mounts on the top and needs a long header extender to clear the RJ45/dual-USB connector.)  OTOH, I have a working solution now, so I wouldn't buy one, and there hasn't exactly been a deluge of interest for the FPGA board.
