Hello,

i am asking this in behalf of a friend of mine from Hong Kong , Sunny , who just started his cycling tour from Bogota to Argentina and got robbed of his bike and all his gear on his first day while leaving Bogota. He does not want to give up however and is now on his way by bus to Quito and hopes that he can find a used bike and camping gear there. Can anyone please tell me about the availibility and pricing of good camping /  bicycling gear in Quito or maybe evebnfurther north in Pasto, Colombia
Thanks a lot and enjoy the ride
Axel

Tell him to get in touch with Carlos, from Construbicis, in the Mariscal zone of Quito, and Santiago, from Tumbaco, in the otskirts of Quito.
They both have Casas de Ciclistas, which means they host travelling cyclists, and have bikeshops with al the tools and gear he could need.
They will surely help him.
For camping gear, there are a lot of shops in the Mariscal, on the streets Juan Leon Mera, Reina Victoria, Veintimilla y Cristobal Colon.

And also tell him to go to the bike shops (in quito there are a lot of them) and ask for parts removed from bikes and that they won't use and possibly throw away. people in quito put a lot of money in their bikes and change parts that are still working. Some friends of mine have just build up 5 bikes for travelling just asking for parts. they only had to buy some of the frames, at cost price, and a few parts.

Construbicis is located in the calle Luis Cordero N24H-141 y Joaquin Pinto
tel: (593)02 256 7312 / 098 46 46 44

Santiago Lara lives in Tumbaco, calle Abdon Calderon n 708. tel: 958 84 311 / 02 237 1115

they are both really good people and will surely help him out as they can...

Much luck for the Hong Kong guy!

Leonardo,

We are looking for some parts for our Surly Trolls, specifically some
brake pads for our Avid BB7 disc brakes. Do you suspect that we could
find those parts at Construbicis? Or can you recommend a bicycle shop
that would carry that kind of thing in Quito? I feel foolish for
forgetting to purchase these things and shipping them to our flight
connection in the States.

Speak to Santiago at the Casa de Ciclistas in Tumbaco. He got me
several sets of Koolstop BB7-compatible pads when I was there. They
were $13 a piece if I remember correctly.

Cheers,
Rob

Forgot to mention, there's also Tecnocycle in Cuenca (http://
www.tecnocyclo.com/) who sell BB7 pads and offer a small discount if
you say you're a cycle tourist.
