Following the post in CDM, how about some thoughts on what the
ultimate handheld music device would look like ...

For starters, I would want:

1. A fold out keyboard that would support overlays so you could use it
as a QWERTY keyboard, piano keyboard, or drum pads.
2. A multi-touch screen that would accept either finger touch or
stylus input.
3. Multi-boot to a variety of handheld OS's

What would you want?

For me it would have to have;
Screen thats visible in sunny weather!
Rugged design...I drop things...
Multitrack sequencing capabilities like Meteor
Good synthesis capabilities like bhajis, sunvox etc
Mic and Line inputs...or even multiple inputs for multitrack...mmmmh
Usb for file transfer
I'm not as concerned about multi boot..but an open architecture to give developers/hackers easy access

For free audio samples, videos,VST instruments and effects and other hopefully inspiring stuff

I don't think that making a tiny touch screen computer with a keyboard
is the answer. People that have worked with hardware know that it
just feels *different* and more satisfying. I would like a TRUE
handheld designed specifically for music. It could still be
completely digital, but it would have to be self contained. No OS to
get in the way. No other softwares pulling the attention away from
the music aspect (i.e. installing a paint program on a palm). NOTHING
BUT MUSIC.

As such, here's what I would like:

1GB RAM
32GB Internal Flash Drive
16bit 44khz stereo sampling capability with line-in
Memory Card slot for loading samples
8 channels multi synth
20 channels sample playback (stereo and mono...not dumb stuff like 20
mono or 10 stereo)
6 multi-fx sends + 2 master effects
Electribe-Like note input and interface
Live mode for performances
3-4 'soft' knobs for tweaking and recording parameter changes
96tpb sequencer
a menu/interface system that doesn't completely suck and integrates
'soft' buttons and 'hard' buttons
Internal sample editor with ability to apply internal fx and render
partial song output directly to new sample slot
should be about the size of a PSP's footprint but can be thicker.
