According to the FAQ, if I want to disable PSS, I just need to CNAME
my serving domain back to my reference domain. This will be temporary,
I don't want to delete my account or anything yet.

I tried this, and verified through whatsmydns.net that my serving
domain is in fact pointed to my reference domain.

Serving: www.nerdwallet.com
Ref: fast.nerdwallet.com

However, the PSS still seems to be enabled. When I view my pages in
Firebug, the content is still being loaded from a Google IP address
(74.125.127.121), and the source still contains references to PSS.

Nothing in my DNS settings is pointing to ghs.google.com anymore, so I
don't know how this is possible.

I also tried changing my serving domain's A record back to the
original IP, rather than using a CNAME, and that didn't work either.

What am I missing? Thanks!

I don't think your site is being served by PSS anymore. Its possible the DNS has not yet propagated in the location where you are checking or your browser cache is stale. I just tried it now, and its being served form your servers directly.
