On Thursday I installed Chrome Canary and the Page Speed extension. I went to the Page Speed tab in Developer Tools and the screen said 'What's new in Page Speed 1.12 beta?'. I was able to use the tool fine and it would complete its analysis very quickly.
Today I went and started Chrome Canary again and the PageSpeed tab looks completely different but more importantly it doesn't work any more. When I click the Analyze button (which use to say Run Page Speed) it gets to "Running PageSpeed Insights" and just seems to stop working. I can still switch to other tabs in the Dev tools but the progress bar doesn't move after waiting for awhile. It seems like I was "upgraded" to PageSpeed Insights.. was this part of canary being upgraded automatically? Is there a way I can make it stick with the old version of PageSpeed?
Thanks for posting this issue. We are working to make a new release of
PageSpeed. It is automatically updated for all users on Chrome 19 or later.
Instead of stick with the old version, we want to fix the new version. If your
problem repeatable? Can you try to close devtools panel and reopen it?
Or, close Chrome and restart it?
Let's know more details, we want to fix it.
Thanks,

Can you try this, to help us pinpoint the cause of the issue:
1. try to run PageSpeed Insights and get it to the place where it
hangs on "Running PageSpeed Insights".
2. click the wrench icon in the top-right corner of chrome, select
Tools, then select Extensions
3. In the Extensions pane, make sure "Developer mode" is checked
4. For the PageSpeed Insights (by Google) entry, click on
"BackgroundPage.html" next to Inspect active views
5. In the Developer Tools pop-up, click the "Console" icon
6. copy and paste the contents of the Console message log into a reply
to this email.

I tried what you said and all I get is a window that comes up with the following url: chrome-devtools://devtools/devtools.html?docked=true&dockSide=bottom&toolba rColor=rgba(223,223,223,1)&textColor=rgba(0,0,0,1)
There is a grey area on the top with a search box on the right side of it. Most of the screen is a white area with no text.
You should be able to reproduce this by going to rapt.yyc@com with @ being a .

From the URL you shared, it sounds like you may be looking at a
different devtools window. Sorry, there are multiple different
devtools windows. :-(
The URL in the devtools we are looking for should be
chrome-extension://gplegfbjlmmehdoakndmohflojccocli/BackgroundPage.html.
You'll expect to see "Developer Tools -
chrome-devtools://devtools/devtools.html?docked=true&dockSide=bottom&toolba rColor=rgba(240,235,226,1)&textColor=rgba(60,59,55,1)"
in the title bar for the devtools window we are interested in.
To get to this devtools window, you'll need to click on
"BackgroundPage.html", next to "Inspect active views" in the
extensions page (via Wrench->Tools->Extensions) to get the right
devtools view. At this point you may end up with multiple devtools
pages open, so check through each and make sure you find the one with
the URL for the background page.
It's important, also, that you attempt to run PageSpeed at least once
and get it to hang before doing this, since the error messages will
only show up once PageSpeed has hung.
Can you give this one more try and see if you see any messages in the
Console tab of the devtools window for URL
"chrome-extension://gplegfbjlmmehdoakndmohflojccocli/BackgroundPage.html"
once you attempt to run PageSpeed and get it to hang?
This will be very helpful to us in debugging and diagnosing this issue.

That's exactly where I went. I went to the PageSpeed Insights (by Google) 1.999.0.10 section in Extensions. Under there I clicked the BackgroundPage.html and got the results I said.
I entered the chrome-extension://gplegfbjlmmehdoakndmohflojccocli/BackgroundPage.html URL into the browser and I get the 'connecting' grey semi circle indicator but it never completes.

I've got exactly the same problem with Pagespeed not working in the latest Chrome dev build. I went trough the steps you've described above and the console-window shows me this:
Five months later it is still a problem. After following the directions above, the Console says this:
Uncaught TypeError: undefined is not a function pagespeed_background.nocache.js:181<chrome-extension://gplegfbjlmmehdoakndm ohflojccocli/pagespeed_background.nocache.js>
This was after a PageSpeed hang during "Running PageSpeed Insights" in the latest version of Chrome: 24.0.1297.0 dev-m
Thanks for using PageSpeed. There is a known issue for PageSpeed on Chrome
24, and we have be in the process of pushing a new release to fix it. If
your PageSpeed extension is 2.0.2.0 or earlier, you may uninstall and
re-install to get the latest 2.0.2.1 for the fix.

I've had this issue for a while, and found this thread. I've removed and reinstalled version 2.0.2.1 of the extension but *still* get the same problem. PageSpeed Insights hangs and just-sits-there-and-stares-at-me when it reaches the "Running PageSpeed Insights" stage.
This is a really useful plugin for me - can you confirm the 2.0.2.1 version has addressed this bug, and where I can send further information to help resolve it?

which deprecated the BlobBuilder support. PageSpeed used BlodBuilder to
save optimized content. We are in the process of push a new release that
use Blob constructor instead of BlobBuilder. If you check the 'Don't save
optimized content' in the options page, you should be able to workaround
this issue.

I'm also getting this error. PageSpeed gets stuck about half way through when analyzing a web page (I've tried different sites, even google.com). I'm running Windows 8 Pro, initially on Chrome v23 and PageSpeed v2.0.2.2, but just upgraded to Chrome beta v24 but still same problem. No difference with "Don't save optimized content" checked. I get no output to BackgroundPage.html whatsoever, it's completely blank. Also, when I've tried running PageSpeed once, I can no longer access its options page, as if the extension has crashed. I have to restart Chrome to get it working again.
Best regards,
Hannes

I can confirm the same failure mode with Chrome 23.0.1271.101 on OS X 10.8 with a freshly installed Page Speed 2.0.2.2. The only difference is that the options page still works for me even after Page Speed has hung.

Howdy, Edoado. Can your provide an example url that hangs? Using my 12.04
machine on Chrome 23.0.1271.97 with that version of PageSpeed, everything
seems to work for me. We'd love to be able to reproduce this problem.

Unfortunately, everything seems to be working OK on our end. You say that
you've disabled other extensions which is a great first step. Have you
tried removing and re-adding the PageSpeed extension itself?
