Man presumed drowned after canoe overturns

May 6, 2012 - 7:54am By THE CHRONICLE HERALD

UPDATED 5:50 a.m. Monday

A 41-year-old man was presumed drowned after a canoeing accident Saturday evening on Spectacle Lake, near East Chester.

Lunenburg County RCMP began searching for the missing man after a 911 call at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday, the force said in a news release early Sunday.

“Preliminary investigation reveals two men were operating a canoe when it overturned," the release said. “One of the men, an 18-year-old male, managed to swim to shore."

By about 2:30 Sunday morning, the team searching for the older man finished looking around the shoreline to see if he had made it to land, Lunenburg County RCMP Cpl. Donald Gray said Sunday evening.

The RCMP have not identified the missing man or explained the relationship between the canoeists.
