I have 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium. Norton Security Scan showed
up on my computer several weeks ago. I think I may have accidentally
installed it when updating java. I have tried removing it through the
Control Panel's "Uninstall a program" feature. However, Norton
Security Scan reappears the next time I restart my computer. I even
removed all Symantec items from the registry, but Norton Security Scan
continues to return. I would like this program completely off of my
computer. Elsewhere has recommended using a Norton removal tool such
as can be found on this page: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/200503310816....
However, Norton Security Scan is not a program for which they have a
specific removal tool, as far as I can see. How do I remove this
program from my computer for good?! Please help!
I have the same problem here. I have run the Norton Removal tool but
the Norton security update is still there i hardly belive that any app
from symantec does anyting for free but to spy on my pc how do i
remove this permanently?
Please help.
This greatly concerns me, as today was the first day Norton Security
Scan found a problem.
In fact, it found 2 problems, neither of which I wanted removed.
Now I'm concerned about what I've read regarding the inability to
uninstall this program.
I hope a Google rep will be kind enough to research the answer and
write out the instructions.
I don't like having software that re-instates itself after removal. In
my world, I call that a virus.
You can try the Revo Uninstaller which eveery traces of the software
you want but be carefuland do not delete unknown system files that
Revo doesnot show
Your problem probably lies in the services. Go to run and type:
"Services.msc"
Find the entry you're looking for (anything with Norton or Symantec in
the name) and double click it.
Change the startup type to disabled. Click the 'Stop' button (if it's
enabled), and then click 'Ok.'
Close the services Window.
Go to run and type "msconfig"
Go to the services tab and elect to hide Microsoft services (to narrow
your search of Norton products). Uncheck anything with Norton or
Symantec in the name.
Go to the startup tab and uncheck any Norton or Symantec products in
the list.
Finally, download AVG Free and Spybot (be sure to enable TeaTimer).

I had the same problem and have been writing angry letters to Norton.
However, I now think it has to do with removing files from C Drive
after you use Add/Remove in the control panel. I followed the
instructions I found at this link:
http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can_i_fully_remove_norton_antivirus_... -- did not go into the registry, but did all the steps up to that and
it's gone from the desktop and not reinstalling. No need to use the
uninstaller. In fact, now that's gone as well. Good luck!

Wow, I just came across this "Norton Security Scan" Virus. which
replicates itself and installs on a computer. I am a virus / spyware
removal professional and I am still trying to find the origin of this
Virus. It strangely seems to have originated from Symantec itself???
Are they really stooping to the level of AntivirusXP 2009? Can't beat
'em join 'em? This will do severe damage to their reputation whether
it really is them or someone is trying to crush their credibility. I
have submitted this virus to various antivirus companies hoping a fix
will be released. It seemed to originate in late December 2008.

On my Windows Vista 32bit, I found that Norton Security Scan
originated and was installed by Adobe Shockwave 11. It was possibly an
option when Adobe Shockwave was installed or downloaded and is
probably the result of some sort of marketing partnership between
Adobe and Symantech.
I found reference to it in C:\Windows\System32\Adobe\Shockwave 11
In Windows Vista, I opened Setup.log in said directory and found -
File Copy: C:\Windows\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\nssstub.exe
Delete C:\Windows\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\nssstub.exe from your
system.
Also in C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\Temp
Remove or quarantine all of the files with Norton in the name.
Also in the same folder, delete NSSstub.txt
I recommend that everyone file a complaint with Adobe for this
nuisance if it is in fact from Adobe Shockwave.
This confirms my suspicions about a marketing partnership between
Adobe and Symantec.
{{{How is Norton Security Scan from Symantec connected to Shockwave
Player?
As part of a recent distribution agreement with Symantec, Adobe
will offer its customers the option to install the free Norton
Security Scan software as part of the Shockwave Player installation
process. Only customers who accept the Norton Security Scan offer will
download the Norton Security Scan software. Those who decline the
offer will download and install only Shockwave Player. Norton Security
Scan is only offered to users who have either already downloaded the
Google Toolbar or who are not eligible to receive the Google Toolbar
offer.
What is Norton Security Scan?
Norton Security Scan is a powerful and easy-to-use tool to help
computer users evaluate threats that may reside on their PC's. Norton
Security Scan informs users if their PC's have been infected with
viruses, spyware or malware. With an easy to use interface, users can
either run a full scan of their system or run a QuickScan, which is a
fast scan of the areas of their computer that are most likely to be
targeted by security threats. Norton Security Scan automatically
detects and receives regular updates, so it can effectively identify
the latest virus and spyware threats. Adobe Shockwave users who
install Norton Security Scan can upgrade to Norton Internet Security
or Norton 360 at a special discount.
Why is Norton Security Scan being distributed with Shockwave Player?
Symantec and Adobe are interested in providing our customers with
the best possible user experiences. Norton Security Scan is being
offered as part of the Shockwave Player install process as an option
to give Adobe Shockwave users the confidence that potential PC threats
can be identified through on-demand or weekly security assessments so
they can take the necessary steps to remediate these risks and ensure
proactive security. Users who do not wish to take advantage of this
offer can easily opt out of the installation.
Does Norton Security Scan contain spyware?
Norton Security Scan does not contain spyware, nor is it a spyware
application. Adobe is committed to protecting customers' privacy and
does not distribute software that is considered spyware.
Is it possible to uninstall Norton Security Scan once it has been
installed?
Yes, you can uninstall it using Microsoft® Windows® Add or Remove
Programs.}}}
