Mohican Outdoor Center is the Appalachian Mountain Club's newest
outdoor facility. Located in the 70,000 acre Delaware Water Gap
National Recreation Area just outside of Blairstown, New Jersey, it is
only 1 & 1/2 hours from New York City and 2 hours from Philadelphia.
In spite of this easy access from major metropolitan areas, Mohican
provides the visitor with a surprising feeling of remoteness in a
truly lovely setting. The center is nestled between two ridges of the
Appalachian Mountains on the shores of Catfish Pond, with the
Appalachian Trail running just east of the camp. Opportunities abound
for hiking, biking, swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, bird-watching,
and visiting Poconos attractions, as well as for cross-country skiing,
snowshoeing, and ice-skating in winter.

The center offers a variety of recreational and educational programs
for AMC members and non-members alike. Weekend sessions planned for
1994 include workshops on birding, backpacking, leadership training,
fitness, watercolor painting, and wilderness first aid. Mohican also
provides a base of operations for a wide range of trail work projects
carried out by AMC in cooperation with the National Park Service as
well as for numerous AMC chapter-sponsored events. The facility can
currently accommodate groups of up to 45. Lodging is in cabins with
bunkrooms that hold 4 to 10 people. The main lodge features a large
central living/dining room with a fireplace, kitchen, and bathrooms
with showers. For a listing of upcoming activities at Mohican and
registration information, send SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope)
to Lennie Steinmetz, 1180 Greenleaf Drive, Bethlehem, PA 18017
(610/694-8677).
