Do you think people could be interested in a course in HTML5/CSS?
Thanks

Yes please.
There will be tremendous interest in an HTML5 / CSS3 course.  We'd love to have you organise such a course!

How do you think you'd structure the 6 weeks? You can run a longer course, but most people choose a 6 week time frame.

Maybe you could try to speak with Dennis Riedel that organized a html5
course last semester[1], I imagine he is still subscribed to this
list.

That's a great suggestion Pablo!

Dennis - can you help Manolo with an HTML5 course for the January round?

Interest in HTML5/CSS3 is going to continue to increase in 2011 as we inch towards greater browser compliance with these standards. However, support for a particular feature is hit or miss. This makes learning these technologies a challenge because a great amount of your time will be spent hunting down which browser supports a particular feature. If you hold such a course I would encourage you to carefully define which browser and version you will be using and which HTML5/CSS3 features you will be discussing and just stick with that subset for now.

Given the current state of browser support for HTML5/CSS3 features courses concepts such as these makes more sense to me:

"HTML5/CSS with FireFox 4"
"Exploring HTML5/CSS3 with modernizer emulation library"
"Using Canvas"

The HTML5 course that ran last session was a great introduction to HTML5 but I myself wasted a lot of time trying to figure out which browser supported any particular feature and this effort subtracted from learning the new features themselves. Luckily the feature space of HTML5/CSS3 is so large that you can easily break it down to specific features that will be covered in a six week course and evolve the content over time as browser support increases.

Great idea!

Not that I want to use any of the content already purposed for this, but I bought a couple of HTML5 and CSS3 courses that were hosted by John Allsop.

I did them myself and kept notes about headings and the important things that mattered to our staff and re-tought the class in 2 x 2hour sessions.

I'm happy to help out and contribute to some areas if needed.

Justin.

Dan's got a really good point about the difficulties with running an
HTML5 course early in the specifications lifecycle.

I know that our friends over at Mozilla Developer's Network are
wanting to push the features supported in FF4. Manolo, let us know if
you want to run your course with a Mozilla Firefox focus and I'll find
out how MDN can help out.

I'd be interested in seeing a HTML5/CSS3 course that focused on theory
at least as much as practice, and I am ok with a Firefox focus if it
is the most compliant browser out there.

I'm guessing SVG stuff and the canvas will be covered too?

Pippa B

Currently Manolo's just pitching a course idea. School of Webcraft
operates under P2PU's course development guidelines which invite
community participation in a course design process.

I think that there's good reasons for several HTML5 courses. If most
people stick to the recommend time frame of 6 weeks a course, there's
no way that one HTML5 course would cover all the new features.

Would you be interested in leading a course around HTML5 / CSS3
theory? You'll get lovely tshirts, the affection of Mozilla and P2PU
and some really good experience in your CV ;-)

A fairly low commitment course would be lead a group of peer through
how to read W3C specifications and explore how SVG and CANVAS support
is designed. Your goal could be to write weekly blog articles about
new HTML5 features and provide more human readable descriptions of
what's in the specification + time frames of their estimated
support.

You don't need to be an expert - just passionate and committed.

I'd be interested in something like this in the future, but right now
I can't commit to taking on a task that big due to school. I was
thinking I'd take some courses with P2PU first to get an idea of how
things work.

There are some neat tools out there too: Inkscape comes to mind as a
free SVG editor, and Stylizer as a non-free CSS3 one.

Any best practices on using excanvas.js as a replacement for HTML5
canvas on Internet explorer? HTML5 canvas objects is fantastics on
Chrome browser, however, I'd love to take a course on how to
standardize it across multiple browsers and even operating systems.

Sorry for the delay answering to the group, unfortunately I won't be able to focus on teaching (that's a strong word, let's say sharing what I know about HTML5) this course. I have a big software release for the next 2 months, and I am going to be crazy with work. I want to do a good job and spend the time preparing classes but it's too crazy for me right now.

Dennis and Pippa, thanks for your help.

Thank you

I will define which browsers support the new features and what polyfills can fill the gap. I will break this course into these sections:

HTML5/CSS3
- new semantics markup
- forms
- video and audio
- canvas
-data storage
-geolocation
-offline content
-web sockets
-etc...

Polyfills for HTML5 and CSS3
-Modernizer
-Selectivizr
-ExplorerCanvas
-There are more in the dark

Accesibility (ARIA roles)

Probably this is too much.

Hope you can give the course (with some other tutor).
I´m a multimedia teacher who´s eager to learn (and then teach) that
subject at my University. In fact I´ve planned to include some
"introduction to HTML5/css3" module in my syllabus, taking advantage
on the previous subjects (xhtml-css2).
In the mean time I´ll try to catch up with some excellent online
sources such as
http://slides.html5rocks.com/
Thank you for the outline/the intention and to Mozilla/P2PU too.
(Sorry some grammar issues, my mother language is spanish.)

As part of the course we should look to cover not just the browsers that take advantage of all of the HTML5 & CSS3 opportunities, but also what we should be doing to ensure that the sites that are built still work to a suitable level for all browsers.

I'm a student interested interaction design, I really would like to cover accessibility and using Geolocation features within HTML5. I also thought about QR codes and UPC codes and how to code and interpret this technology for the future. I've been following red laser and stickybits and these API's intrigue me.

Jason, I would recommend that the focus should be on helping new and intermediate students master the current and upcoming standards and design trends (not browsers). Then offer resources for the 'code hackers' who still dream the dream of 'graceful degradation' to go spin their wheels on something that clients never want to pay for.

P.S. Can't wait to see what the school of web craft becomes, very exciting!

Hi!

I'm one of the Mozilla staff members working on the Mozilla Developer
Network. It's true that we'd love for people to use Firefox and to
explore and learn about the features it supports. It's also true that
we want web developers to create sites that work for as many browsers
as possible. We want "This site requires XYZ Browser" to become a
quaint historical reference.

I've emailed Dan separately to see if MDN can incorporate the
information about browser compatibility that he discovered during the
last P2PU session on HTML5.

I also agree that limiting a class to a specific focus is a good idea.
There is more to HTML5 (for example) than can be adequately covered in
a 6-week session.
