One of the participants in Web Development 101 asked a really great question:

During my readings today, I wanted to see how a "pro"goes from start to finish when designing a website with just a text editor. A video of this would be uber cool! Does anyone know where someone that has recorded themselves making a website with just a text editor and a browser. The video would have to be long, but I feel that I could see the pros workflow and try to adapt it. I just feel all over the place when I have been putting together my stuff.

Can anyone help us out here?  Do you know of any resources that would help?

Great idea, I love screencasts, and have made a few myself (but not on this particular topic). It's easy to make, and there are lot's of open source/free solutions out there.

I'm assuming the original question meant to substitute "coding" for
"designing", as I haven't met anyone yet that does site design from
concept to build solely in a text editor.

I've seen a lot of piecemeal screencasts or videos that cover specific
elements of the site build process (e.g. "here's how to create a fluid
layout") but none that cover the entire process from start to finish.

As the original question states, a video that covered the entire process
would be insanely long and most probably very, very boring.

I've only used Rails once, several years ago, but I started out by following a screencast like the ones at rubyonrails.org/screencasts. I think it might have been this one:

  http://media.rubyonrails.org/video/rails_blog_2.mov

In 15 minutes, we go from scratch to complete weblog engine with comments,
ajax, an ATOM feed, an XML and JSON API, tests, an administrative interface,
  and much more!

Is that the kind of thing you meant, or did you want a video of developing a website that doesn't use anything on the server-side and is comprised solely of HTML/CSS/JS?

I could make one of these for setting up a simple service with webob + genshi, but will only do so if there is interest (also, I can't do sound, so it would be just video).
