Hope to see you there!

If it's sunny (please) we'll sit outside and drink cool G&T's with
slices of cucumber or something :)

Hey everyone,

I've been thinking for a while that it would be really cool to actually see you guys working on a project you liked. I've provisionally booked a room with 30 chairs and a projector in the Computer Science Department, and will supply beer and nibbles if you guys thought it would be good to do a live coding session. Would people want to do this? Does anyone have a project they'd like to showcase or get feedback on? One think I personally would love to see would be the whole process of contributing to Rails, for example.

We could always head to the pub afterwards...

Hi Matt,

Sounds interesting. Can you elaborate a bit more about how you think it
would work?

As an alternative suggestion, we could potentially do something along
the lines of picking a Ruby Quiz (http://rubyquiz.com/) and all having a
go at implementing a solution (perhaps in pairs) and then discussing the
different implementations. This might be a bit more interactive?

Anyone else have an opinion?

Jon

PS. Anyone going to geek night tomorrow? Planning to have food at 6.30
at the Victoria if anyone wants to join.

I would prefer more rails task then pure ruby but any kind of
interactivity sounds interesting for me.

Will be there, but probably directly to Oxford Geek.

Sounds great to me! I'm up for anything involving coding together, and if it turns out we need a room or a projector near the centre of town I can provide :)

Can't make tomorrow, was in my calendar but promised to go to a friend's event (there will be free beer at least).

Hello!

This sounds great!  I think - going down the 'sharing different approaches to problems' - it may be more valuable to work in straight ruby rather than rails; as then we wouldn't be getting into the realms of tackling web/frontend issues or UI design.

Jon,  I'm heading to geek night (looking forward to your talk!) - we were planning on heading to mission burritos for 6.30. Would you fancy coming there instead? I saw your tweet, but probably a bit late in the evening to reply…

Hopefully see a few of you tomorrow!

Ok folks - we chatted about this at OGN and the general feeling was that
we should give it a go. So let's give it a go!

Matt, can you fill us in on the details of where we need to go? Will
there be internet available?

Cheers,
Jon

We decided to go with Matt's idea of having a group hacking session at
the CS department, but are awaiting details about the room that Matt
booked. Matt, can you fill us in please?

Hey guys!

Apologies for the radio silence, I've just got back from a ridiculously amazing skydiving trip at the weekend and retrieved my MacBook with a brand new logic board, awesome!

Since the building requires card access and we tend to, I propose we congregate in the Lamb and Slag from 7.30 until ~7.50, then I'll take us over to CS around the corner.

Unfortunately the wireless requires that you are a member of the University or another educational institution affiliated with Eduroam, but I have a wireless dongle people are welcome to use, and I recommend people bring theirs, or their tethered smart phones etc.

My phone number is 07793 207 079 if anyone arrives after 7.50.

See you all tonight!

Matt.

Wowzer,

   That does sound ridiculously amazing!

So, the plan is that we meet at the Lamb and Flag at 7.30 - I'm good with that.  I know that it's really 11th hour, but it might be worth updating oxrug.org.

I'm a little hazy on anything mentioned last Wednesday, was there a plan?  Is it awesome?  I was wondering what kind of challenges we might work on; I had a look at the ruby quiz site, the ones I saw might be a little in depth for our timescale,  maybe we might get more out of the ruby golf stuff.

I mentioned the evening to a guy from OGN (Peter West) - he seemed interested in coming along this evening…

Looking forward to tonight!  Everyone's coming, right?

We're still a bit sketchy on the details so we'll work it out when we
get there.

I can't be bothered to update the website at this stage as no-one looks
on there ;) have tweeted though. RT if you like :)

Hey guys,

Since we were talking about three.js last meetup, I've just seen this, which I really enjoyed:

Should waste 10 mins of your afternoon :-)

knowledge.

Yep I thought it was good. I particularly enjoyed the informal
'discussion group' atmosphere which through up some interesting
questions.

What seemed to work was having a piece of code that someone (i.e. me)
could talk to the group about, and the discussion just came out of that
really. So it turned into more of a code discussion than an actual
coding session I guess.

What do people want to do next month? It seems like we should do this
sort of thing again, but should we do it alternately with pub sessions?
And does anyone want to volunteer to talk about some bit of code that
they've written?

Another idea is that we could all work on some sort of challenege (e.g.
http://codebrawl.com/ or http://rubyquiz.com/) *before* the meeting and
then discuss our solutions at the actual meeting. But that requires a
bit more commitment from attendees so I dunno.

Thoughts welcome!

I'd be happy to talk about PaperTrail, my gem for versioning ActiveRecord models. Depending on what people would be interested in, I could explain how it works, why it's built the way it is, etc. And you could also all help me figure out the piece of the puzzle I'm stuck on :)

Either pub or lab would work for me!

Cheers,
Andy
