I made an elevation map of the new Tanglefoot trail that is almost finished. The trail goes from New Albany to Houston, MS through Pontotoc.

Click the link for the elevation.

The map starts in New Albany, goes to Houston, then returns. Miles 0-44 are New Albany to Houston. Miles 44-88 is Houston to New Albany. The site ridewithgps.com is very reliable on elevation in my opinion.

Right now scheduled for July 2013.  I can't wait.

Thanks for the elevation.  That will be fantastic for families.

The Tupelo news had a report about the trail. Construction was delayed sure to weather. I think the only thing left is print and signage at intersections. They are trying to open the trail in time fire the New Albany Tallahatchie festival September 21

I road the trail from Ecru to New Albany, to Pontotoc and back to Ecru a
few weeks ago. I am disappointed in the wooden bridges. Other than
that, I really enjoyed the ride. The last time that I rode the
Longleaf Trace (Hattiesburg to Prentis) was a couple of years ago. As
I recall, none of the bridges were wooden.

I've ridden the Chief Ladiga-Silver Comet Trail (from Anniston, AL to Atlanta, GA) several times, and I think it has wooden bridges.

Extra $2 million dollars for paved bridges on a $10million project.  Wooden is fine

Might want to edit some posts because as of August 17 the trail wasn't open. It's illegal to ride right now

Regarding wooden bridges: just be careful on the wet. They're a lot more slippery than the trail. I know from personal experience and a broken wrist

I love riding the illegal trail!

I will keep my opinion on the bridges to myself. That whole, can't say anything nice deal. ;-)

Wooden bridges are MUCH BETTER than NO BRIDGES
I haven't had the opportunity to ride the Longleaf Trace trail; however, I have been on the Virginia Creeper Trail in SW VA and it wasn't even paved. It was packed slag w/ wooden bridges. We should all be very thankful for what we have!

Don't mean to complain about the bridges. Very happy to have the trail. Just advising caution when wet based on personal experience and a trip to the emergency room.

As far as riders on this group picking and choosing what law s to follow, I guess we'll reap what we sow.

Someone else may correct me, but my memory of the LongLeaf is that there are very few bridges period. There is one long (paved) over the highway near the USM entrance but I am having trouble visualizing any other ones at all.

On the other hand, there are lots and lots of places the LongLeaf stops for a crossroad - the longest uninterrupted stretch, if I am not mistaken, is just under 4 miles; otherwise there are road crosses usually every 1-2 miles or so. If the Tanglefoot has bridges rather than so many intersections, it may be both safer and a little more enjoyable.

But I would like to echo the warning about wet - the first time I watched a cyclocross race (near Cleveland, OH), the course went across a wooden bridge that was damp - from frost, I believe. One of the riders went down - slipped sideways, and took out about half of the Cat 1-2 field during the first lap of the race.

Maybe a little more snow/ice/sleet than mud/rain in Ohio when compared to Europe, the western US, or the mid south. I once saw a video of a fall cross race in Georgia that took place on a dry, sunny day - which is, of course, completely wrong.

We need a Mellow Mushroom somewhere along the trail. Is New Albany the only 'wet' spot along the trail?

Actually, I thought that last long bridge coming into Prentiss was wooden, but my memory is like a sieve.

Personally, I'll be more worried about the other behaviors that are sure to occur (just like on the Longleaf):  pack riding that does not stay to the right and expects, apparently, oncoming traffic to just ride off the road; baby carriage convoys that spread out across the entire surface and, again, expect all traffic to go around; runners/cyclists/skateboarders/inline skaters/etc. plugged into some device, hence deaf to the Real World (me behind them) who (1) stop in their tracks w/no warning or expectation of being run over, (2) weave back and forth, while moving down the center of the path, utterly oblivious, (3) run/bike/etc. on the wrong side and tilt their heads as they look at you, wondering why you are in their way.

Did I mention the folks who meet while walking/riding/etc., stop and have a conversation in the middle of the road, blocking the entire road?

God forbid you chastise someone for being in the wrong too! (where's my bike air horn, Sheryl? It's going back on the bike!)

Yes, yes, it sounds like I have some issues, but I truly did love having the Longleaf Trace in my backyard, and I'm certain I'll love the Tanglefoot just as much.  What I do not love are those who simply have no consideration for anyone other than themselves.

Damn, you'd think it was a Monday rant or something.  Time to hit the gym...

Man, I was all over that when I first heard the Tanglefoot was being built.  I get bored riding out and back routes really fast, but if there's ice cream or pie or sausage (hail to the Almighty Swine!) along the way, that becomes motivation to ride.  And if the pig is really good, it is motivation to suffer.

Did I mention doughnuts?

And rattlesnakes ... don't forget the extremely large timber rattlers who will most likely enjoy sunning themselves on the trail!  Keep your eyes open and be prepared to throw sticks and rocks from a safe distance!

The LongLeaf also had one very large (red) squirrel who was a regular menace. Gray squirrels are bad enough as they tend to change directions 6-7 times before settling on which direction they are going to go to leave the trail; this big red one (he had whitish fur in the middle of his head, creating the impression of a mohawk) would just stand in the center of the trail and glare at you until the last second.  But, yes, snakes, turtles, rabbits, deer, etc., on or near the trail.

I would advise caution respecting group rides. Pacelining may be best if you are good at that. I have seen entire families run off the LongLeaf by careless groups, riding 2-3 abreast while they chatted, oblivious to others. Lots of accidents occurred during the regular Sunday group ride out of Hattiesburg. We used to pass them going out while we were coming in ('we' were just 2) and inevitably someone near the back would pull to the left out of the paceline - so they could see ahead - just as I was passing the line going the other way.

The best quality riding tended to be furthest from the major stopping/parking points - for the first mile or so by the "Gateways," you just needed to take it easy and expect children, families, walking groups, etc. Like a lot of other things, it all comes down to being aware of others and, unfortunately, sometimes expecting the worst. I know that it is nearly universal behavior (I can say 'nearly' because I never use them) but I blame the ear buds/headphones for a lot of the problems.
