"Ever try to walk down a road with no sidewalk? Been forced into a close call with traffic while biking through a busy intersection? Have you ever run across a highway with no crosswalks to catch your bus?
Well, Congress has a chance right now to change our old road-building habits and make sure our streets take all of us into account, whether we're walking, biking, or taking public transportation. Because roads aren't just for traffic – they're for all of us.
But our representatives in Congress need to hear from their constituents—from you and me—that there's a real demand for safer streets from everyone in the country. I just sent my members of Congress a message asking them to voice their support of this "complete streets" bill – will you send a letter too?

Mandating complete streets for new road construction is a no-brainer. It would ensure that we have safe sidewalks and bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, and safe places to wait for public transportation. It would help revitalize business districts, keep kids safe on their way to school, and allow seniors and Americans with disabilities to move around town with freedom and flexibility. Doing it right the first time is significantly cheaper than having to retrofit streets once they've been constructed.
Local governments are already leading the way. More than 110 municipalities have passed ordinances mandating that new road construction provide a full menu of transportation options to meet the needs of everyone using the road. Now we need Congress to take the next step for all Americans – to make cities and towns safer, and walking less dangerous and more convenient.
Please, help out and ask your representatives and senator to voice their support of the bill today.
