When I first moved into town 6 or so years ago, there were always organized rides leaving the from OBC during the week and the square on the weekends with tons of folks riding. I miss those days!!!

Is it that no one really wants to ride their bikes anymore or is it that we need to bring back some weekday/weekend organized rides?

One thing we have been doing lately is providing cue sheets/maps(thanks Carol) for the weekend rides. This will allow some folks who want to ride at their own speed do so without having to feel like they must keep up with the fast group.   Will this help or are we just farting in the wind?

This is a rough idea of what I think might work for the coming spring:

Monday- Recovery Ride----everyone welcome and no real attacks(b-team pace)—Active Oxford

Tuesday-Interval day for those looking for some speed OR an organized shop ride--OBC

Wednesday-3:30 Water Valley Ride OR a b-team pace ride to one of the landings—Active Oxford

Thursday- Interval Day for those looking for some speed OR organized shop ride--OBC

Friday-recovery ride leaving from somewhere near the square and meet for drinks at a bar/rest/someones house for fun!

Saturday-  9:30 Ride leaving somewhere on the square—somewhat long with the “a-team” and “b-team” starting  together, then breaking up into groups

Sunday- Lords day….ride at your own risk.

I think we need to make an effort to start these rides going again. Otherwise, the continued attrition the OC is currently experiencing will continue.

Let me hear some feedback!!!

What offices does the OBC have available?  I was sorta hoping to toss my hat in the ring to lead a Friday Leisure Ride (specially designed for newbies and others getting back into the sport) and as the weekend Road Ride Coordinator (my map making ability was going to be my political capital).

Carol –

OBC = Oxford Bike Company

Oxford Cycling is different so that there wouldn’t be any confusion between the cycling group and the bike shop in town.

Sounds great, but time of day will be an important factor for me - - that and the hill factor.

I first met you and Karen on those rides from town and plenty of other great folks as well. I miss them too. This is a transient community and the riders who participated in those group rides eventually evolved from a wide range of abilities (where the BTeam started) to a few guys who were trying to get some fast miles in during the week.

It became obvious to me that it was not worth my effort to go to town to ride with people I couldn't keep up with when I could stay home and ride with my husband (who will actually ride down to my speed for at least part of the ride). This meant I wouldn't end up on busy roads as a lone cyclist. I like company on the road bike. I invited others to join us and thus began the BTeam rides from the Neill's.

I don't know if we've had such great participation on these rides because new riders are confident that they won't be dropped or because some people are more comfortable avoiding city traffic at rush hour. Regardless, it's not that people aren't riding their bikes, they just aren't gathering in town as much.

I'm all for joining more groups rides from town but still plan to ride from my house as well. If the Bteam regulars will weigh in we'll see what kind of schedule would work for the majority of the group.

That said, anyone want to ride at 3:00 today?

Yes!  From your house?

I'm game for either a ride from my house or a ride from town. Anyone else planning to ride and have a preference?

How about we start from the parking lot at the FNC soccer fields and ride out toward either Clear Creek or Coontown?  Gets us away from traffic, pretty flat, and I'd like to keep the pace down today because I'll be passing through Tuscaloosa tomorrow and will do the "all-hell-breaks-loose" speed ride with my old Druid City Bike Club posse at 3:30.

With the shorter days and holidays arriving, I (for one) need to be sure to get in as many Butt Burning miles as possible ... heheh!

If it keeps drizzling, I won't be riding anywhere today.

Looks like I'm out. It's still sprinkling in this neck of the woods.

If its any consolation, I miss riding with you guys too!
Work has just taken over for me this year. During the few weeks that I
am home, I have been catching up on life things like gardening and
cleaning and trying to get my life in order! Maybe next year will
bring more time at home for me.
Maybe Double Decker will kick start the year, or perhaps a spring
bbq...

Good ideas Chris. At a very minimum there needs to be a ride for all
every Saturday morning from the Square.
