Hi Guys,

Friends of ours have relocated to Beira on a three contract and have invited us to visit them.

My brain says trip from JHB to North KDP – Gonarazhou – Beira – Maputo – KDP-  home.  Time is an issue but would like to see what I can do in two weeks.

What are the roads like on these routes as well as safety, border posts esp Zim to Moz. Suggestions of where to stop of where to stop off - would spend max of 2-3 days in Beira, would be welcomed.  Trip with Defender and Explorer in tow.

Thanks

Your inquiry is very very broad. Chop it into smaller sections and re-submit - that way you'd get much more reliable recommendations.

Hi Henry

I have a friend who travels through Zim on a regular basis (most recent trip was from Moz, through Zim last week) and he has never had major issues. The odd difficult cop, silly fines etc are encountered sometimes, but also not always.

My suggested route would be:
Day 1 - Jhb to Tshipise/Musina etc
Day 2 - Through Beit Bridge to Gona
Day 3 - Gona
Day 4 - Gona to Great Zim (or if you have seen that, skip and straight to Mutare)
Day 5 - Great Zim to Beira
Day 6 - 8 Beira
Day 9 - Beira to Inhambane/Tofu area
Day 10 - 12 Inhambane/Tofu
Day 13 - Inhambane to Letaba via Giriyondo
Day 14 - Letaba to Home

Some things to consider:
- The above trip is a bit rushed.
- Roads are all in good (ish) shape, except for the stretch between Mutare and Beira which is really bad. This stretch is only about 300km, but bargain on 5 hours at least. From the border to Chimoio is not too bad, although there are a few really big potholes that can catch you off guard. I can send you a .gpx file with many of the potholes and bad sections marked (did this stretch in Jan 2013)
- If you are into birding, staying over just outside of Mutare is a good idea. I have the details of a really excellent birding guide if you are interested.
- Great Zim to Beira is a long day, especially if towing. You might want to break that up.
- Inhambane to Letaba is also a long day and you have to be at Giriyondo before 15h00 (or 15h30?) in order to get through.Might want to stay over near Xai-Xai, or closer to the border at Aguia Pesqueira Camp.
- I left out Gorongosa NP, due to time constraints, but that is also an option on this route.
- On some maps you might see Papagaio between Inchope and Ihasorro and you might be tempted to use it as an overnight stop. It does not exist! Learnt that the hard way.
- If you can squeeze in a few extra days, it would help :)

Give me a shout is you want to discuss options, I have a few suggestions on accomodation etc.

Hope this helps!

Cheers

If you mean Kruger by KDP remember that Pafuri border is currently closed.

Hi Sean,

Great info. Now I can work out a plan and repost. Never been to Moz so your experience is appreciated. Hope family well

Thanks for info. I don't see any major roads going north east. Appear to wind there way north west following rivers. I am looking at Jean's suggestions

Hi Jean

I assume you tried to stop at Rio Save Game Reserve recently only to find Papagaio defunct?   When did you go and are you sure you were at the right place as I have not heard that RSGR is closed.

Hi Mike

We had it on the GPS - T4A or Garmin I can't remember. When we got 'there', there was only a faint, overgrown, flooded track into the bush (off the EN1). There was nothing. We asked around, but nothing. Hence my advice not to follow the map/GPS.

Could be that we were at a completely different place. Do you have a waypoint perhaps?

Cheers

Have not been there for 2 years but I do know the original camp was abandoned about 10 years ago and more recently there may have been a change in management of  the area. Mike

Just a reminder

No fine can be more than $20 in Zim. Be very careful that you don’t pay more than you should if asked to pay fine as most fines are either $5 or $10

Just got word that Papagaio Camp in the Rio Save Game Reserve burned down a few months ago.  Seems that the concession to the Coutada may have been revoked and the manager at the camp had not been paid for a while.
