The sad part of incidents like these is that the elephant has clearly lost fear of humans and the almost inevitable end result is death or injury for a tourist and death for the elephant.

what else are they keen on?

Basically ANY fruit, but Citrus and Apples is a definate NO-NO in free camping situations
It will be safer to play Russian Roulette with two rounds in the chamber.

IMO the behaviour towards the elephant was silly. It could easily has become annoyed & become more than an inconvenience.

I think there is more to this story than apples or fruit........for one just by their reactions; how can they stay in their chairs sipping their drinks and ready to film at that exact time? Maybe im just too suspicious?

Also, I have seen elephants ignore apples and oranges lying on the ground within 5 meters of them, next to a water hole which they drank out of.

I agree too.  And then the behaviour of the tour operator vehicles wasn’t “quite right” (this for you HeineJ) either.

Well, when an elephant comes visiting at the campsite, best you stay put and keep as still as possible?

If I were in this situation I would also sit still

To a point yes, but common sense must prevail.  avoid antagonising the thing.

I wonder about those okes'  underwear.  Very much the same happened to us one weekend in Ndzhaka camp in Manyeleti.  Two elephants came into the camp the Friday night.  We walked wide ciecles around them while they were browsing the trees.  The camp staff told us they are regular visitors and we should not be worried but we must not go too near or try to touch them.  They stayed the whole weekend without any mishap.  I think they thought about us as just another kind of baboon and also part of nature.

Cheers

When a lone bull elephant arrived and started inspecting us rather too closely on Hunters road last year we decided discretion to be better part of valour, and all piled into our vehicles to wait for him to satisfy his curiosity. There were bite marks on my seat after he started exploring the front of my truck with his trunk.

After quite some time spent checking out our small lager of tents, very nearly having a little lean on my Oztent, he retired to the edge of the clearing and stood watching us most of the night. I can tell you the campfire burnt long and brightly that night.

He arrived as we were about to have shower. I wonder if the water had attracted him as the waterhole and all the surroundings were very dry.

Now this is plain irresponsible behaviour John.
