Folks

For info of all travellers to Zim the Toll gates have been increased from $1 to $2 for car and trailer.  They normally do have plenty of change at the tolls but it is good to keep a fair amount of small notes ie. $1, $2, $5 AND $10 as very often shops etc. don’t have.

Regards

Paul

Shame my only thought is you lose out because of the ranting’s of a few.  The good majority of people are brilliant and the most happy and respectful people you will meet.

I can assure you that those who you wish to make a stand against will not be effected at all but the good folk at the bottom of the chain will lose out.

I certainly don’t decide not to come to SA because of the ranting’s of some of your politicians and the toll costs of much more than $2 in most cases although your roads are in somewhat better condition than ours I grant you

Please don’t hold off coming to Zim because of the ranting’s of a few we love having you here and no matter what the colour of your skin or the language you speak you are much appreciated

Blessings

Paul

Paul, How is the police intimidation at the road blocks before & after each town going? Late 2014 friends were harassed for all sorts of things, the worst was being held responsible for xenophobia! Fortunately our friend trains management in behavoural skills and dealt with them by agreeing, ie that they also hate xenophobia. When their friend, a judge, drove in front they had problems because he took a legalistic stance.

Pity Zim didn't choose the ZAR instead of linking to the US$: Zim is getting quite expensive especially compared with Namibia, which also doesn't have harassment.

Thanks.

I don’t know if the ZIM Police makes a difference between RSA and Swiss tourists, but last year the they where, normally very correct. Sometimes they wanted to check the lights or see the TIP but always the driver’s license. The exception was the (probably) fake policeman at Masvingo, I wrote about last year in this forum, how openly asked for a  $ 20 bribe for something he invented.

A few times we had quite some fun with them because they always come to the wrong side of the left hand driven vehicle. The funniest one the was puzzled, because Christine handed him my driver’s license.

Hi Dave
My experience with the police might be different to yours as being a local they might treat us with different criteria.
In essence the government is desperate for money and police road blocks are one easy way of generating funds. At the moment the max fine they can impose is $20 for any one offence.
You will find anything upwards of 10-15 road blocks between BB and Harare but to tell you the truth the majority of them are reasonably pleasant in attitude as long as you don't get frustrated and make derogatory comments at them
There are quite a few insignificant regulations which they can fine you on and they will use them to extract as much money as they can.  If they fine you at one road block keep the form as you can show it at any other road block to prevent paying twice for the same thing
If you can get an app called road angels which gives you a lot of info on what is required and the max fines payable
And what is required to carry on/in your vehicle.
Sad about the rand slipping so badly as it does make it very expensive for you and very cheap for us ☺
Hope this helps
Paul
PS keep to the speed limits as they often have speed traps especially in the lowveltd area there is a 10km odd stretch in the middle of nowhere which is 60kms an hour and they will normally have two speed traps in that short stretch

Yup, some trivial rules indeed. I got nailed nailed for driving with my fog lights on and only having one triangle in the car on my last trip (Jan/Feb)

One of my reps got intimidated and man handled buy cops carrying rifles a few weeks ago between Harrare and Bulawayo. He was alone and driving a Zim hire car and was accused of all sorts of things from speeding to not stopping at a stop street (of which there were no stop streets in the area he was in). Fortunately he only had a small amount US$200 (IIRC) in his wallet which they helped them selves to and they gave him a receipt! They then didnt want to give him his passport and drivers licence back as they accused him of having more money hidden away. He also gave them all the cool drink samples that he had collected from his customers. They were kind enough to give him some money back after he asked for some money for the toll fees. (Think it was less than US$10 or something)

Due to this and other problems we have experienced, we have cut all lines of credit and we will not be going back to Zim which will unfortunately affect some of the local Zim food and beverage producers (like the bigger cool drink, ice cream producers) where we have been supplying specialised products, which they can not get anywhere else. If they want to continue to use our product they will have to come to SA to collect it and pay cash.

That's a shocker, worse than the rumours doing the rounds. Thanks for advising us, Bruce. No doubt they sensed that he was a vulnerable employee.

Paul,  this should get to the Zim equivalent of Moz's tourist protection organisation. Perhaps Clive Stockil could help : he was involved in getting help for visitors at BB.

The police road blocks were charming when we visited in 2012 & I saw no problem. My wife was more cynical but accurate: the system had been set up & she predicted that it would be a matter of time before the corruption & intimidation set in.

Sad but no surprise.

We travelled through Zim for a few weeks earlier this month, and had NO issues at any police checks.  We entered from Botswana at Kasane, travelled to Vic Falls, then Bulawayo, through Masvingo and out at Mutare to Moz.  Back into Zim at Mutare again a week or so later, visited Zim ruins, travelled a different route via Gweru to Bulawayo and then exited the country at Plumtree.  In total we were stopped at 4 roads blocks, at ALL the rest we were just waved through.  When we were stopped, they usually just checked the white and red reflectors - at one road block (North of Masvingo on the road to Harare) we were asked to show drivers license and Tip, at another one (shortly after entering the country from Kasane), they wanted to see our triangles.  At all stops the police were friendly, and treated all vehicles the same - if you don't have white reflectors on the front and red ones on the rear of the vehicle, then you WILL pick up problems, regardless of whether you are a local or tourist.  In a few instances, we saw police searching local vehicles, checking triangles and fire extinguishers etc, but we were just waved through.  Even when we left Zim at Plumtree, the officials were very friendly, and asked when we were coming back again!

IHMO, if a person encounters problems at any police check in Zim, then they either have an un-roadworthy vehicle that does not comply with Zim regulations, or they have attitude issues when stopped by the police.

Glen I generally agree with you about one's personal attitude being the key : we have never had aggression problems from police because we smile & are genuinely affable. However, picking on a salesman ( Black & vulnerable? ) shows thuggish officialdom is just below the skin of enough officials to put me off until we've enjoyed all of Botswana,  Namibia & SA.

Got robbed of R3k by touts at BB in 2012 but that's a different topic.

Got to toss in my ten bananas worth here by saying that unfortunately the horror-stories, whether legit or not, whether due to bad attitude or not, do so easily and eagerly be taken up as representing the "norm".  Bad news travels fast, far and furiously while good news does not.  This is normal, but I do get hot under the collar when the scattered (and I for one have experienced - rare) bad behaviour from authorities in whatever country, is twisted to become "this is what you expect can in...".

For what it's worth (as the investment types say: past performance is not an indicator of the future), I drove from BB to Chirundu (and braved both crossings finding the usual quiet chaos at both), and we were stopped six times by friendly, but sometimes persistent, cops.  I did pay $20 legit fine for my fire extinguisher which had lost its smoke a decade ago.

So far (must be hundreds of trips over the fourty or so years), every trip across our borders has both reinforced my faith in the dignity of the common person, and my animosity to cynical authority that holds that same common person in contempt.

Feel better now and will crawl back into the wood-work for a while ; - /

Personally, I find the attitude of the police in Botswana far worse than Zim, I don't enjoy travelling through Botswana.  (Although it is a beautiful country to visit). Just as an example, I was fined at a speed trap last year when driving down past Drotsky's cabins - one of those obscure 60km/h areas through a village - the police officer that stopped me had a big smile on his face - "I saw you were slowing down, but managed to catch you in time - P80 for travelling 61 km/h in a 60km/h zone".   Earlier this month, after we exited Zim at Plumtree and were travelling up from Francistown to Kasane in Botswana, the police stops were all much less friendly than in Zim, with the usual "where are you coming from, where are you going to, license and cross border permit" etc.  My comment to SWAMBO was "we are back in Africa!".

Agree.  Yes, you will always have the "bad apple", but that doesn't make it the norm.  During 4 weeks in Angola, we found the police there to be friendly, but efficient, always checking documentation, VISA's etc.  Except for one incident in Benguela - the officer was clearly trying to find any excuse to fine us, but could not, and his partner (a lady) could later not contain her laughter and walked away to laugh (I could see her in the rear view mirror).  It eventually ended when I told him to arrest me and take me to his supervisor, then he grudgingly waved us through.  An incident like this does tend to "sour" an otherwise enjoyable trip though, but it is an unfortunate reality when travelling though Africa.

Points well made, Glen & Mike.
Apologies, I got on my high horse being wistful about how it could (or used to) be! ( & am a bit hit up by "Being poor (/ a mess etc) is optional" per "Why Africa is Poor")
At least these stories put off the sensitive souls thereby leaving more space for the / we less naive overlanders.

TIA & make the most of it.

While I agree that in most cases attitude does play a massive part in how you are treated by these cops, i find it unacceptable that a cop basically rob's a person of all his cash, weather he has a bad attitude or not.

On Sunday evening I met a guy from England who is a CEO of an investment company. He told me of his story of his trip to Gonarezhou in Feb where a cop asked him if it was his birthday because he was smiling when he was pulled up. When he said he was smiling to be polite he was asked for something to make the cops day better as the British owe the Zimbabweans. He eventually paid the guy a US$100 to be let through. They were apparently stopped 8 (iirc) times between Bietbridge and the entrance to Gonarezhou and out of 8 this was the only guy with a bad attitude. The rest were very nice he said. On his return he had no issues.

Unfortunately for me one bad apple is enough for me and there are plenty other places to visit. As much as I love Zim and never thought I would say this, they wont see me until things change there. (unless I can do short trips like Hwange from Pandematenga or Gonarezhou from Moz) :)

I suppose it's down to personal preference, but one bad apple definitely doesn't ruin my day. Bruce, you need to change your attitude - you may never make it out of Joburg judging what I hear about the JMPD (hearsay, of course, and TIC).

Haven't had a problem in Zim, only friendliness. It sometimes gets tiresome slowing down for the roadblocks, but then when I see one here in ZA I get so excited that the cops are doing their jobs I wished we'd have many more.

In all my years of travelling , I've found that people react to how you treat them. Remember they have nothing better to do all day , so they don't mind stuffing you around if it will pass the time for them. Yes I've had my fair share of issues with bribes etc. , but normally staying civil and showing that you are not intimidated gets you through .

Apart of the border crossing at BB and the false cop in Masvingo, we were pleasantly surprised of ZIM. The supply of food and gasoline was pretty good and most campsites much better than described in the travel guides. The friendliness, helpfulness and openness of the locals was also a great experience.

We will soon return to ZIM but certainly not entering at BB;-)

Rob you are probably correct but having traveled extensively in Zim, Moz (first trip in '89 as a passenger and second in '90 driving a series to Beira and camping on the beach) and then Bots in the last few years and now we are doing more traveling in SA and now planning overseas trips, I have never been through that sort of thing - even in Moz in the early days...... so yes possibly I am just over reacting and need to change my attitude, but having grown up in Zim where i spent most of my holidays on the Zambezi or at Mana pools, kariba, the falls and Hwange maybe its because im just spoilt .

Marc, this same rep loves traveling in Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya and Ghana and has told me he will go back to Zim, so I dont think so, but anything is possible.

Only crap I have ever had was with Sef African cops and also only in the last 10 years. The friendliest cops was definitely the Nam guys, second bots, only one incident where he  threw his toys at the vet gate, as I stopped a meter away from his imagery line, but he was also the only one wearing aviator sunglasses and had his hat cocked like a true dictator. Was never stopped in zim and neither in moz so no comments on those ones.

A friend’s response:  +1

                Hi Mike,

You remember the folks from Germany, Marion und Walter Halscheidt, www.katonworldtour.com.

As part of their world tour they travelled through Zimbabwe and noted in their journals, “never again” as they were constantly stopped in their expedition truck for reflectors that were too small, wheel chocks that were not secured properly etc. This was all to get bribes.

Walter has a policy, they will never pay bribes and he aggressively told the cops it is bullshit and he won’t pay for nonsense.

They had plenty of confrontation and cut their trip short and went to Zambia instead. Just not worth it.

We all hear the stories, so why not just cut Zimbabwe a wide berth. Travelling is not cheap anymore, why put up with rubbish and spoil a family holiday?

Some of my staff have to do work in Zim, and when they travel with locals in a locally registered vehicle they do get stopped, but not so often.

All foreign registered vehicles are targets.

Kind regards

MikE

OK, so their reflectors were too small for the size of the truck, which entitled the police to stop and fine them.  How is that a bribe?
