Not easy arranging for vehicle repairs when out of the country!

British 4 x 4 collected the Disco last Friday on a low bed. (It is sad to
say, but is the fourth time someone has sent me a photo of my Disco on a low
bed truck)

It ended up being the alternator as some had suggested.
British have quoted me R4700 for a new one, but I am currently trying to see
if I can have mine reconditioned or find another reconditioned one
somewhere.

Regards
Gavin

Hi Gavin

Whether the battery or the electric system has a short, you could find out
with a simple test. Disconnect the battery, then directly attach jumpers to
the cables. When the cables still get hot it is to the electrics. It should
be possible to start the engine this way to, without battery.

I can see a pattern here... Fortunately I don't have the temperament to entertain unreliable vehicles indefinitely. For me this would the trigger to start exploring alternatives. And yes - go with the new one.

I have only had the thing for two years. Going to be difficult to break even with what I still owe in the Disco!!

I meant yes - get a NEW alternator. But I also alluded to the fact that for me so many reliability issues would prompt me to get rid of the vehicle and explore alternative 4x4's :) I realise this is not always financially viable or practical...

New gearbox (recon)

On-board fire caused by dry grass build up in Botswana (fried the suspension electronics and pneumatic hoses)

Handbrake problems (new actuator)

Handbrake problems after replacing handbrake pads (overheating caused broken disk on the way to Kruger)…………………… J

What? LR stuffed up a window rubber of mine when they couldn't put it back properly (I told them the window was squeaking sometimes...) Eventually I did it.
Now you want to trust them with removing the body etc?

Eish I would stress big time!

Every Disco 3 and 4 gets the body removed every 160,000Km...

That was not the issue... the problem was that the fkkr at the workshop went on a gallivanting trip with my car... but did not realize that Tracker is recording the trip...

Well - I am happy how it all was handled in the end...

It now has a new motor and going strong...

LR is not for sissys... :-) (never was)

Have to say it. (While touching wood)
Loving mine.
Had it for 18 months. Just normal services and now had the control arm bushes replaced under the extended warranty. All going well and service costs are reasonable for this sort of vehicle. Now has 159 000km on it, 29 000 from me.
Thirsty but I knew that would be the case with buying the V8.
A lot a car for very little cash as long as you are prepared to cough up R2k at each fill up now that I have the long range FR tank.
Been driving a Fortuner from Avis for the last week on a business trip. Experiencing the harsh ride and silly interior makes me love my Landy even more.

May it behave for much longer!

The strange thing is, regardless of the Issues, I always end up defending the Disco in the company of the Toyota clan

No worries Gavin,

We know that when you bought, you did so with your heart rather than your head, your response therefore quite understandable J

I have a friend who ragged me about my LR’s until his Mitsubishi 2.5 cracked a piston.  He has had the vehicle repaired at a cost – Mitsubishi found a chip on his engine and were not sympathetic – and he has immediately sold it.

It happens to all makes.

Also, their 3.2 Diesels don't like running out of fuel, the injector pumps die a nasty death..
