I saw the at the frontrunner premises.

Good quality but hellishingly expensive though IMHO.

There is a technique which works perfectly tho, and does not need these.

Just close your hand around the bottle neck, just below the crown.

Hook the crown edge on any (horizontal) metal ridge (bumper, door striker, fender flare, etc,) and tighten your fist. As your hand swells around the bottle neck, it easily pops the crown off.

Now we on the other hand have found cans to be a PITA – they puncture very easily.

For beer – I still prefer glass, although I will occasionally break down and take cans – but if at all possible, I take glass.

For cold drinks – 500ml buddie bottles are our choice – each one makes 2 drinks.

Those can crushers are still available at Northern Off-road

Those squashers are EXPENSIVE. Rock works just as well.

Re bottles, In hot conditions, I actually prefer Savannah to Beer. However, we have found on several occasions that Savannah (heavy) pops the tops off the bottles when all shook up.

When you open things up and get that first whiff of rancid apple juice over everywhere, in the middle of nowhere and far from  water.... No more bottles.

This cold drink/beer holder stacks cans three high, and stops the cans rolling around the fridge. Fifty mm pipe with a cable tie for the base.

Dunno if this counts, but I bought RAM mounts for my GPS and iPhone and had an auto electrician fit an iPod kit ( which works on the phone as well) as well as my GPS charger behind the dash of the Fortuner, with wires to the devices protruding through the gap next to the radio. Now my GPS and phone is mounted on the windscreen in front of me, with no cables all over the show.

The benefits:
- No chargers and wires everywhere.
- Both 12v sockets are free for other gadgets. This is useful when we go on long trips when we take Swambo's Nuvi loaded with T4A and my Oregon with Garmin Topo. Having both mapsets open and available is nice, and we have a backup GPS to boot.
- iPhone works through bluetooth car kit and is within dialing distance
- iPhone acts as iPod through radio kit
- iPhone stays charged, which is useful if bluetooth is on all the time.

Dunno if this is cool or geeky, but it works for me.

Considered a few options with my iPad, but I think that is asking for an accident!

Good idea!

I’m busy with my new canopy, and will have a tent/bed attached to it, and having the truck level will be advantageous. J This might work better than one of those mini spirit levels. J

Remember the ends of the tube must be connected with each other (or open, but then your level will evaporate!), otherwise the level reading gets influenced by the air pressure variations.

Dou you mean 3" pipe 75/80mm as 50mm is a bit thin? Also that plastic around
the cans act as insulation, you can get colder beer by cutting a few holes
in it to let the cold air in.

I have tried several combinations:

Leave both ends open and rain water will fill up the tube, or evaporation will empty it.
Both ends closed with silicon doesn't give accurate readings for obvious reasons.
Both ends closed with a hole punched through the silicon at each end works best. Had no maintenance to do now for a year.

The pipe is placed upright in the fridge amongst the myriad other bottles, containers, etc and wedged in. It sure wouldn't work in an empty fridge.

I wonder how many years of constant use it'd take to recoup what was used to be able to - and to - make the stove?

"Support a better world. Half the planet cooks on open fires, leading to 2 million premature deaths each year and contributing to global warming. We're using the same technology inside the CampStove to bring clean, safe energy access to families across the developing world."
I also wonder how this $129 stove is going to help the 2 million people who're going to die prematurely!

But, yes, very interesting - would love to see one in action.  (I just hate guilt driven advertising - especially when the connection is so tenuous).

Where would the world population be now if all lived to old ages...but this is not a discussion for here...

The Kelly kettle work a treat, and you really only need little twigs to get boiling water.  But stay away from the aluminium ones and stick to stainless - much easier to clean

I have told some friends who are driving back from NL to Australia that they *need* to have a kelly kettle to do the job properly. After all it fulfils so many of mans needs. You get to light a fire, You get to play with it by adding bits of twigs or newspaper. You even get an end result in having boiling water for your tea (well I am British).

I believe the Aussies came up with a better designed one in that it had a proper handle.

European weather check - nice balmy evening . Maybe summer is on its way after all.

I'm sooo with you on that! Instant coffee isnt even worth getting a
kellykettle for! I know this is getting away from the gadget topic a
bit, but seeing as you asked about coffee....... I get Lyons fresh
coffee bags to take out camping. Not quite espresso, but makes a
decent mug of filter coffee in the morning. If you've not seen them,
they are like massive t-bags, but full of ground coffee. I think they
are british, and we can get them here in the Gulf, but im pretty sure
i've seen them in SA (maybe in woolworths?) when i've been down there.

I use a coffee plunger for camping.

Over Easter I was introduced to Nespresso coffee at a friend's house.

All I can say is WOW (try it), then WOW2 when I saw what the capsules cost.

HOWEVER I am seriously thinking of getting a machine (can get a knockoff unit which takes Nespresso capsules for ±R1000), for camping only... that I can afford for a few days a year!

Trouble is I have an inverter which handles 800w only. I believe the unit needs 1200w.

My dilemma :Would the inverter handle it for only a 2xcuppa twice a day? – otherwise its back to the plunger.

Actually there's another, even simpler solution. Turkish coffee. I picked up a taste for the stuff earlier this year during a few days in Istanbul. No filter, plunger or espresso maker required.

While we're on this subject, does anyone know where to get a robust hand operated coffee grinder?

Now, small electric grinder + 350W inverter works wonders. Fresh ground beans, insulated stainless steel plunger, 4 cups of coffee – ahhhhhh! J

Hi Henk

Generally Moka pots do not produce enough pressure to create a good crème. Bialetti make a range called Brikka available in 2 or 4 cup that has a special valve increasing the pressure to give you a crème.

I only drink ground coffee, so have gone through all this before, years ago.
I have tried to carry a coffee press, 12V filter coffee machine,
percolator, etc. Now we are down to the simplest (even at home).
Teaspoon of ground coffee in some really hot water, stir well, wait
until cool enough to drink and by then all the granules are at the
bottom. Also when making coffee for a lot of people just throw the
coffee straight into the pot. Putting a stick into the water assists
in getting the granules to sink.

My idea as well. Really finely ground coffee works like a dream (and
you can add a cardamom pod).

I had a surprise a few weeks ago at a meeting in Tel Aviv. The hotel
we were in provided sachets of coffee which were just this (without
the cardamom). "Instant" Turkish coffee.

I reckon that the "cooking" above the kettle is a joke in that what can you
cook within 4 minutes? "Cos after that you're going to have your pot sit on
top of a boiling kettle!

Attached is a pic of a change I made to mine. Home made whistle kettle!
