I am currently in Lusaka and have just decided to extend my trip to Tanzania.
I will appreciate any information about good places to stay between here and Arusha as well as the preferred / most scenic route. I have been to Dar and cannot see the need to expose myself to the traffic again. Any advice on alternate routes would be appreciated.
How strict are they at the border regarding the yellow fever certificate? Are there clinics near the border where one could have it done? Is it real threat?

I will send you a spreadsheet with our trip in 2011.......you can pick a few
camping places from that. We went via the great east road to Malawi and Tanz
and came back via the great north road.
Maserani I will never stay again....a good pub yes but there were 7
overlander trucks when we were there in July ......no drinking water, no
elect, 2 toilets per sex and only cold water in showers.

Which is the fastest route to Arusha, via Dodoma or Morogoro?
I am a bit pressed for time and need to get from Arusha back to Cuamba (Moz). Is it recommended to take the easterly route down lake Malawi to Lichinga or is it better to go via Malawi?
Cant help re best route to arusha but have you considered the west tanz route to moz via songea, congresso border and lichinga to cuamba. Can send more details if req. Mike

I had to change my plans and decided to travel from Mkushi to Chipata and on to Cuamba
We stayed at Mutinondo (spelling?) Wilderness camp list night and travelled through South Luangwa today after filling up at Mpika. Mutinondo is an absolutely fantastic spot to visit for any nature lover. I will post pictures when I get back.
The ride down the escarpment was quite spectacular and it took us 7h to do the stretch from the Mpika road through the park (T4A says 3:45 or something like that!).
They had 120 - 140mm here in one night last week so we got horribly stuck in one spot and had to bundu bash around a couple of other places.
Great fun altogether and they fortunately let us out of the park at 6:20 without any hassles.
We paid 158,000 ZK per adult (79,000 for kids 13 and under) and 79,000 for the car; for the privilege of having it thoroughly scratched on overgrown tracks and detours.
We are now at Croc Valley where we had a great dinner with good company. I can recommend it.

Mama Rula's camp in Chipata does have the best rump steak in Africa, cooked by Isabel: worth a special stop.
Don't miss Zikomo Camp (www.zikomosafari.co.za c/o regular overland.co.za contributor Robbie Becker) which is just outside the park in the corner where the S Luangwa NP crosses the Luangwa river to the Nsefu sector of the S Luangwa NP on the E of the Luangwa river. We were there +/- 25 to 29 Oct before the rains arrived. Temps in the upper 40s : Suicide month before the rains is NOT the time to go! Will do a full report when I get the pics etc sorted out.
