Dear all,

We will be leaving for Botswana in 5 days. We want to visit Kubu
Island coming from Maun.

Does anyone have the following information:?

Is it possible to reach Kubu Island from Gweta over the NtweTwe Pan?
(T4A track starting at S20 12.416 E25 15.633)
Or is it advisable to drive from Nata to Kubu? (Exit at S20 10.500 E26
00.786)

TIA,

Sander

Not at present, pans are still wet. Kubu only accessible from the north.

Sander, there's a report on the list from a week or two back describing that
approach from the South wasn't possible but from the north (Nata) it was (JF
was it you?). If the Nata route is doable, then the Gweta is similarly OK.
You will cross Ntwetwe but only about 12km is actual pan surface and usually
drier than the southern entrance track to Kubu...

Tia, we have just came back and has driven the Kubu - Gweta over Ntwetwe
without a problem 3 weeks ago. However we were not able to get access to
Kubu from Lethakane direct (to much water) - had to drive around to enter
from the top road. So if you exit to Lethakane you cannot exit via the
bottom road but need to exit as you anter and then turn left southwards at
the Tshogong gate S20.80105 E25.74734

Two weeks ago, we tried to leave Kubu via the southern route, and got
about 6kms from Kubu before things turned very very slippery and snotty
and wet. We decided to turn around and head out via the northern route.

I cannot say what the rest of it looks like, but it's possible that in 3
weeks it would have dried out enough to drive it.

Cheers
Jacque

For summertime I'd recommend the "Nata" route via Mabole village in the
North Sander refers to - it travels mostly along an elevated ridge, well
away from pan surfaces and mud.

Regards,
Francois

Letlhakane Mmatshumo, eigentlich ist ganz Botswana zu befahren, Moremi,
Chobe, Central Kalahari, Nam. Caprivi, auch der Norden von Namibia ist

We stayed for 2 weeks at Kubu Island, no problem at all.  (Did not say from which side / road they approached or left)

Letlhakane Mmatshumo, eigentlich ist ganz Botswana zu befahren, Moremi,  actually the whole Botswana is accessible
Chobe, Central Kalahari, Nam. Caprivi, auch der Norden von Namibia ist
erreichbar.
also the northern part of Namibia is accessible.

That's what we also experienced in December/January. The problem is that this kind of information is not absolute and subject to overnight change.

If and when conditions change for the worse, the Mmatshumo and Gweta routes are much more likely to be problematical especially to inexperienced drivers than say the Mabole route. So which one to recommend?

Kind regards,
Francois
