ANTI-SEAL HUNT EVENT THIS SATURDAY DURING OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY
Come join Sparky, the giant inflatable seal, and draw awareness to Canada's commercial seal hunt as the Olyympic torch relay passes through Ottawa this upcoming Saturday. IFAW and PETA have teamed up for this event and need as many people as possible to come down and show support for calls to end the seal slaughter.
"The Olympic torch is a symbol of peace, and of bringing communities together. It is in this spirit that Sparky is traveling across the country, to unite compassionate Canadians sharing our desire to bring an end to the unnecessary slaughter of seal pups for their fur. These events will not disrupt the Olympic torch relay, and are not being held to protest the Olympic games. All eyes will be on Canada as the 2010 Olympics take place on our West coast. At the same time, the largest marine mammal slaughter in the world will be set to commence on our East coast. Let's take this opportunity to remind the world that the majority of Canadians are opposed to the inhumane and unnecessary commercial seal slaughter": Sheryl Fink, International Fund for Animal Welfare

CHRISTMAS FOR THE ANIMALS!!
You will probably remember from past emails that there are two amazing animal sanctuaries that operate near Ottawa:
Teja's Animal Refuge
http://www.tejasanimalrefuge.ca/
and
Rescue RR
http://refugerr.org/.
They rescue and provide permanent homes for hundreds of previously abused and neglected animals. Some members of the OADL community want to help these sanctuaries out while also providing the animals with a christmas celebration of their very own! Volunteers are looking for donations of food and treats for the animals. Also greatly appreciated would be gift cards to grocery stores or donations to be put toward future veterinary bills, shelter repairs and food. We will glady pick these donations up from you and they will be delivered to the animals on December 20.
Here are some of their favourite treats that would make great donations:
Dogs: Dog treats, potatoes, carrots, etc.
Cats: Cat treats, wet cat food
Pigs: pasta, rice, veggies, fruits, and they love bananas!
Horses: Candy canes, apples, carrots
Cows: Pears, carrots
Sheep and Goats: Cracker jacks, popcorn, carrots
Feathers: lettuce, fruits, especially grapes!
Gorcery store gift cards, gas gift cards, cash donations.
Old blankets also come in very handy, especially for the pigs.
