There is a square in London called Arnold Circus. Apparently some wag
put up a sign saying "No Elephants". This has been diligently
recorded in OSM.

Excellent. I didn't realise initially, but that is the code behind
api.fosm.org. Finally a free and open source source code release of the
implementation. Thank you Mike for publishing this and thank you 80n for
releasing it under a free license.
