OCW Android App in GSoC

Hello all,

The OSU Open Source Lab is intending on trying to merge all of the changes that Igal and others did and incorporating it into our organization repo [1]. Additionally we are hoping to have a GSoC student work on the app this summer however I'm sure they won't be done by the time OSB is happening unfortunately.

So my question for you all:

1. Is someone already working on getting an app ready for OSB13? And if so who?

1a. If no one is, does anyone have any problems if I try and have an OSL student at least get the version on Igal's repo ready for this year?

2. Does anyone have any major features they would like to see added that the GSoC student could work on? (this is outside anything included on the issue tracker(s)).

3. Is anyone interested in being a backup GSoC mentor who has worked on this code a lot recently?

IIRC (which I might not) the changes that Igal made last year changed a bunch of the year-specific references to instead reference the "current" event. This _should_ reduce the need to release a new app every year.

I don't think anyone is currently working on this, and we'd be glad to see someone work on it.

None that I know of offhand. I'll pull down a copy of the current app in the next couple of days and look it over to make sure.

3. Is anyone interested in being a backup GSoC mentor who has worked on this code a lot recently?

I'm willing to answer questions on the OpenConferenceWare API side of things, but I've never worked with the android app code itself. 

As a further note, I do have the credentials used to publish the app last year, and can work on coordinating publishing for any updates.

I personally do not mind at all if some one (or even many someones) takes up this task, as I have no real desire to dip my toes back in to the land of andriod/java before OSB. I think that GSoC is a perfect way to get more folks involved and it seems right in line with OSB's goals. 

As for extra items I seem to remember that there was an ordering issue that I was attempting to resolve when I last poked. Specifically the display lists the talks in order that they are received rather then a consistent order based on rooms/location. I do not know if this ever got resolved, but I do not see it listed here:

Excellent. I'm assuming the JSON feed probably hasn't changed since last year? If so that should make things rather easy.
