Thanks to all who were able to come out last night (and not hindered by movies, rocknroll, or other distractions :), we had a great turnout and a solid meeting.

I'd like to line up date, place and talks for next month:

Glancing at the calendar, I would suggest June 4, and a return to Orlando Brewing. Matthew Williams has already expressed an interest in talking about the activities on the OLPC, and it would be great if we had one other topic. As I mentioned last night, I think Chris' idea of 'Beer-side chats' is a great way to describe talks for Orlando Python, and Chad noted that keeping the talks in the medium experience range could be very helpful, so talks about Python itself would not be out of place.

Chris and I spoke briefly about this, but it seems like we may want to pick another venue if the group gets much larger. One way of keeping track of this that doesn't require a ton of extra email is upcoming.org ( http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/2467389 is the event from last night). If you don't mind, it would be helpful for you to mark yourself as 'attending' the event, whenever it gets set up.

I'll suggest a few topic choices.

I'd like to TALK about wxWidgets and/or "pyinstaller".

I'd like to HEAR about what you guys consider good style or form in
Python. I have the sneaky feeling that my Python source looks like
PHP to other Python programmers (my code is probably far from
Pythonic). Chad could probably handle this, I volunteer him :)

We don't have to be spatially close to do this.  I propose we come up with small problems and each write some solution to it (anonymously?), and then examine the results and talk about how code can be more Pythonic.

I propose a first task:

Read paragraphs from console and emit the ten most-used letters or numbers in each paragraph that are not in the top 5 from the previous paragraph.

Send solutions to me.  Deadline, next friday.

Assuming the date works, I can definitely bring the OLPC XO for some
show and tell and probably do a coding -> packaging -> running on the
XO demo.

Definitely have another talk lined up as I think mine will be more so
a show and tell.

It's seems everyone usually tries to format and style their source
code after
their 'preferred' programming language.

Mine sort of resembles Pascal.

Anyway the meeting could not be on the first Thursday of the month ...
? Any reason why that date? Just asking since it seems that most of
the tech groups in Orlando always choose a Wed or Thursday for their
meetings - never any other day of the week...

GoLUG - 1st Wed of the month ... http://www.golug.org
LEAP - 3rd Thurs of the month ... http://leap-cf.org
OrlandoCocoaHeads/ORUG - 2nd Thurs of the month ...
http://www.orug.org & http://twitter.com/OrlCocoaHeads
OPUG/OrlandoPHP - 1st Thurs of the month ... http://meetup.orlandophp.org/
OrlandoJUG - 4th Thurs of the month ...
http://www.codetown.us/events/event/search?q=OrlandoJUG

I'm sure I'm missing some - there's a pretty good list on the
barcamporlando wiki:
http://barcamp.org/BarCampOrlandoGroups

OPUG & OrlandoCocoaheads are the newest groups of the above ...
I realize that conflicts aren't always avoidable, but if one can avoid
a conflict isn't it best to do so?
Thanks

Avoiding conflicts is a good idea, generally. If you'd like to suggest a different date, I'm sure we'd be all ears.

I like using the first week of the month because it's easy to remember, & the only other group I have any interest in is ORUG.

How does the first Tuesday of the month sound? I did some minimal
checking and I don't "think" anyone
else is using that date plus it's still on the first week of the
month.
Chad's mysql group & FL creatives meet on Mondays (1st & 3rd
respectively).

Only one more day for this.  I have only one response so far.
