Great news in the message forwarded below from Columbia Riverkeeper. Many of us who are either going to the People's Climate March in New York or planning solidarity activity in Oregon have been active in the fight against turning the Pacific Northwest into a fossil fuel corridor for coal and LNG export and crude oil transport. There are still huge coal export projects undergoing environmental review in Bellingham and Washington that need our continued opposition, and looming increases in oil and LNG capacity.

But today, there's another one down and Oregon said No to coal exports and that's a cause for celebration! Kudos to Columbia RIverkeeper, Power Past Coal Coalition, Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign, and Portland Rising Tide for keeping us informed and mobilized.

(This graphic presentation from Sightline Institute describes the Pacific NW as the Thin Green Line that stands between fossil fuel companies and global markets.  http://daily.sightline.org/2014/03/20/the-thin-green-line/ )

Dear Laurie,

Today, decision-makers finally said “no” to coal exports. We just learned that the Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) denied a key permit necessary for Ambre Energy’s Morrow Pacific coal export proposal. This is huge. Ambre’s dirty coal project would have sent hundreds of coal trains through the region, thousands of coal barges down the Columbia River, and further disrupted our climate with dangerous carbon pollution. DSL’s decision is a defining win for clean water, salmon, and our communities. I’m extremely proud of this success and you should be too. Thank you for helping make it happen!

DSL Victory!

Governor Kitzhaber and Oregon state agencies listened to our broad coalition and made the right choice. Send a message to DSL Director Mary Abrams and Governor Kitzhaber today and thank them for their leadership!

Today’s decision is a win for Northwest communities who are leading the fight against coal exports, and a historic moment for the whole country - we can do better than mega fossil fuel export terminals and transporting dirty coal through our communities. Our families deserve and will accept nothing less than this kind of leadership that protects our health, safety, economies, and climate. And we couldn’t have done this without your hard work!

Please send a thank you note to DSL Director Mary Abrams and Governor Kitzhaber today!

Congratulations,

Brett VandenHeuvel
