Do you have any idea what is going on here? There are raised bumps on
my orchid and part seems to be spreading.

Dear Carleigh:
I believe that what is going on with your plant is something called
Oedema (though the pictures were a bit out of focus). This is a
blistering that occurs when cells in the epidermis or mesophyll (upper
and middle layers of the leaf tissue) rupture. Scar tissue forms which
is the bubbled and bumpy appearence you see.
It is an environmental issue and not an infectious condition. It
occurs when the roots draw up moisture faster than the leaves can
transpire it and the cells burst. Generally it seems to occur mostly
in the spring and the fall. Make sure that the plant is not perhaps
getting suddenly heated by early morning sun while in a room slightly
cooler than the plant would prefer, as this is one situation that may
cause this problem.
This will not really spread, though the damaged area may appear to
enlarge for a few days. And it will not kill the plant or necessarily
weaken it despite disfiguring the leaves.

Thank you Dennis, That makes perfect sense as I had accidentally left
it in the window. I am so relieved that it is not fatal damage or
disease.
If you have time to answer another question - I bought this lovely
orchid at the Garden Show a couple weeks ago but I am not sure what it
is. Do you have any idea? It has a nice fragrance and sadly is

I also purchased a great Psychopsis Papilio but it also sadly lost
it's bloom shortly after arriving home. I hope this is from the shock

The pictures are of a Brassia hybrid (It might be a Brassidium, I
can't be sure, but the culture is the same in either case). This is a
cloned plant, pretty commen in the trade and I really should know what
the name of the hybrid is, but cannot bring it to mind. This plant
wants intermediate temperatures, very bright light, and to be watered
when it is barely moist. After it is through blooming, it should be
allowed to get quite dry between waterings until new growth begins.
Psychopsis flowers are not long lived, two to three weeks is about
right. However the inflorescence will continue to produce new flowers
every few weeks throughout the warm season (if they are warm enough
and the light is good enough they can flower all year), and can do
that for several years. Never remove a Psychopsis inflorescence until
it is obviously dead and dried up. These are not easy plants to grow
prefering a warm humid greenhouse in bright shade. But I have seen
people manage to grow them very well in the home. They like to stay
somewhat moist but are sensitive to overwatering, and when a new
growth is coming up take pains not to get water into it when you
water, do let the potting mix dry out a bit in the winter. Try not to
expose it to night temperatures below 60.
Never repot unless you see active root growth starting , and repot no
more frequently than you have to (every two or three years), as they
resent root disturbance. If you can keep a Psychopsis happy, they
become amazing specimen plants seldom without at least one or two of
those totally cool flowers.
