Each time I start Opera, it pops up an error message box, headed "Error
while initialising mail". Inside the box it says: "There was a problem
initialising Opera Mail. Engine Init() failed"
I don't use Opera Mail, as it happens. And if I hit Close, Opera starts up
and runs as usual. So this is an annoyance rather than a show-stopper.
Any thoughts on why this has just started, and what I need to do to stop it?
Thanks,
SteveT

Opera has some problem reading info from the mail directory on startup,
apparently. I can't tell why that would be from here.

If you don't use mail, newsgroups, chat, or rss feeds in Opera, you could
delete the mail directory (while Opera is closed). See 'Help > About
Opera' for its location.

Well, Opera defaults to not doing this, but you can enable it in the
installation wizard. Since 9.5 only in the classic installer, the normal
installer doesn't offer it anymore.

I don't quite see how this can not have helped...
Thanks, Rijk. I've deleted the folder (C:\Program Files\Opera\mail) but it
has made no difference. The error message is still exactly the same.
Incidentally, I've noticed there seems to be loads of application data under
the Program Files tree. Isn't this supposed to be "naughty" under XP and
Vista?
Anyway, any more thoughts on how to remove that error message would be much
appreciated. (For instance, I would consider doing an uninstall and
reinstall, if you could tell me how to remove all traces of the previous
installation).

Then I reinstalled Opera 9.5.
I was amazed to see that my shortcuts were still there, but it occurs to me
that it probably imports them automatically from IE.
Anyway, the startup error message has gone, now. The only thing left is to
customise it all again!
Rijk: you pointed me to a downloadable toolbar button which switches the
current tab to Speed Dial. Could you remind me where it is?
Thanks for your help.

Magic! Thanks for all your help, Rijk. Very much appreciated.

I had the same problem. Could not manage to fix it, even
deinstalling/reinstalling. Had to go on with 9.5-beta. Please tech-people,
help and check where it might come from. Thanx.

Did you read my earlier answer? Did it help?

Just for the record, Rijk's answer didn't help me, although I'm grateful for
his efforts here.
I cured it by:
1/ Exporting my bookmarks to somewhere safe
2/ Uninstalling Opera
3/ Deleting the entire Opera tree under Program Files
4/ Deleting all Opera entries in the registry
5/ Deleting the Opera trees in AppData\Local and AppData\Roaming (if they
exist)
6/ Installing Opera 9.5
7/ Importing my saved bookmarks
Worked a treat!
SteveT
Buddy,
You should start the opera as "Run as Administrator" to solve the
issue.
