Noted, thanks. In this case, I wanted to link to the thread, since the next logical
question of documentation on the format of the .newsrc file, is answered there too.
I don't worry about long links here, since I know opera won't break them.

The above short link links to the thread.
This one links to the single message:

Ok I read and re- read this post and link and still can't find the file
that will let me download more than 250 Headers.
I'm a little confused about this.
How would I change it to download up to 400 headers instead?
Thanks

For this server, it'll be news.opera.com.newsrc in your Mail directory.

Using M2, Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/m2/
You can´t change the 250 number to 400 or any other.
But you CAN download any number of headers at any time folloing this:
From Opera´s M2 Tutorial at
http://www.opera.com/support/tutorials/opera/m2/imap/#news-messages
Downloading specific messages
M2 supports the "nntp://" protocol, often used for linking to messages.
Use the following syntax to download a specific message:
nntp://<newsserver>/<newsgroup>/<message range>
For example, to download the first message in the opera.general newsgroup
at news.opera.com, you'd use nntp://news.opera.com/opera.general/1. To
download the first through one thousandth messages, use
nntp://news.opera.com/opera.general/1-1000. Message numbers are usually
located in the "Xref" message header, as in "Xref: news.opera.com
opera.wishlist:16983" which has the form "Xref: <newsserver>
<newsgroup>:<message number>".
Since these addresses are a simple URLs, you can enter them directly into
Opera's address bar.
Best regards,
Flavio.

Usando o M2, revolucionário cliente de e-mail do Opera:
http://www.opera.com/m2/

I'll go through it in excruciating detail<G>. If I miss a step, that's becuase I'm
using linux, not windows, so I'm going from memory here.
In opera, select Help, then About Opera.
Scroll down if necessary to find the Mail directory.
Highlight the directory name, right click and select copy text.
Close Opera.
Open notepad, (select start/run/ enter the name notepad).
Select File/Open
Paste in the directory name.
Change the type of files listed from *.txt, to *, or all.
Look for the file with .newsrc at the end of the name, that corresponds
to the news server you're downloading the newsgroup from. For example
news.opera.com.newsrc, news.prodigy.net.newsrc, or something similar,
and open that file.
Find the line for the newsgroup you want the 400 headers from, Here's
a couple from my copy of news.opera.com.newsrc ...
opera.mail+news: 0-11675
opera.off-line.version!
The first one shows that I'm currently subscribed to opera.mail+news,
because it has a colon ":" after the name, instead of an exclamation mark,
and that I've downloaded all messages that have been assigned the message
numbers 0 to 11675, inclusive, by the opera news server. Note that their
may be multiple ranges listed, if there are gaps in the message numbers
assigned by the news server.
The second line shows that I'm not subscribed to opera.off-line-version!,
and never have been since there is no number range after the exclamation
mark.
To get opera to download the latest 400 messages from opera.mail+news,
just subtract 400 from the last messsage number downloaded. I.E. change
11675 to 11475. This may not exactly 400 messages, as some of message
numbers may have been assigned to articles that have been cancelled, but
should get close to 400.
To get all of the messages for the newsgroup, change the range to 0-0.
If you change the exlamation mark, to a colon, to mark a group as subscribed,
opera will download the messages for that group, but will not create a view
for it, so you should subscribe to a group through opera, before editing the
.newsrc file, to change the message numbers.
Then use opera, as usual, to download the messages.
Note that the message numbers are uniuqe to a news server, so message 11745
in the opera.mail+news newsgroup on the opera news server is not likely to
be the same message, in the same newsgroup, on a different news server.
I once unsubscribed from the opera.beta newsgroup, which would have resulted
in the line being changed to something like
opera.beta! 0-15000
When I resubscribed, three months later, opera downloaded all 8000 messages, that
had been posted since message number 15000, or whatever messsage number it
was. So be carefull how many messages back you go.

Thanks for all the info Flavio and David ,
based on what you said I tried the address bar entry and it worked!
I got the posts going back as far as 2 months from the server I use.
This is great as I can refer to my earlier posts and replies to follow
thru to the present.
This is what I did,
typed in the address bar,
nntp://news.mynewsserver.net/alt.tv.smallville/42000-47600
That was very easy and I can read my earlier posts again after finally
making the switch to Opera's Newsgroup reader that I set up earlier this
week.
Never again will I use that dumbed down silly Outlook Express security
risk with more holes than Swiss Cheese !!!
lol,
;-)

Notice that, as said by someone before, this message numbers are on a
per-Server basis. I.e., the same message, on the same news group, but on
other news server than nntp://news.mynewsserver.net will have a different
message number.
I think to refer to single news messages, you would have to use the
message-ID.
But I´m not sure about this info. Maybe someone could explain better,
please!
Best regards,
Flavio.
