Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/
I noticed you're using Mac-intel. There's an IPv6 glitch when Opera
and Google interact under Snow Leopard. If you're using SL, upgrade
to Opera v10.10 beta...very stable and has this problem fixed.

If you're not on SL, how and where are you typing your search and what
is the exact result?
Hope this helps. ;)
I'm trying the beta after I close. When the problem struck the return key
could not be used
except for the off chance that I wanted a message page on another tab.
This happened with the search bar, navigation bar or the Ask search form
on the page below them as I recall.

I'm running 10.5.8 PPC and I had a similar experience (on 31-Oct-2009)
after upgrading.
At the time I was in a web form text entry block. When I hit Enter for a
new line, it took me to the Unread Mail window.
This was a show stopper so I reverted to 10.0.
I have updated to 10.01 today and it appears to be fixed.
