Playing video in Opera

Hi,

I so watch quite a few video podcasts and other online video content. On
my computer (running Linux Mint 7), the Gnome mplayer plays a lot of the
video through a plug-in. However, this player plug-in is buggy and quite
unstable. For instance, If I pause the video it won't start again. Can
Opera use other players in the same way it used mplayer? Hopefully
creating a little more stable experience.

Anything that supports the netscape plug-in api should in principle
work. There may be issues with exactly which subset of the plug-in api
is implemented in different browsers, and there are also other
differences between browsers that can create problems.

I too, have the exact same problem. If I pause the video, I have to
refresh the page to start playing it again.

the default player for just about any type of media file (under Extra
> Preferences > Advanced > Downloads), Opera insists on using any
other installed media plugin. In my case the Totem Media Player plugin
which does some weird colors and is too resource hungry for my
machine. If I un-install every other media plugin except vlc, Opera
simply does not play anything...

I 'd be so very happy if Opera would start supporting VLC fully !

plug-in architecture is severely broken. I think you should make a bug

Please tell me (and other Opera users who want to know) how to make it
the default player.

And dispense with Shockwave Flash and Real Player?

Like I said, under Extra > Preferences > Advanced > Downloads (maybe
different for your language) there is a whole list of file types and
you can specify what Opera should do with each single one of them. Not
an easy "activate/deactivate" switch, sadly. It would be nice to be
able to control de-/actiavtion of plugins via Extra > Preferences >
Advanced > Content > Plug-in Options...

Perhaps that suggestion will make it to the "Opera Wish-list" ;(.

But my problem appears to be elsewhere. I have disabled all "plugins"
in Opera's "Quick Preferences". In spite of which, the Flash Player
plugin (flash-plugin_10.0.12.36-1_i386.deb) continues to deliver
undesired videos.

Now that is a serious ouch!

Now that you mention it, I think I saw that behaviour some years ago.
The "enable plug-ins" setting didn't affect inline elements. I'd still
say that's a bug (and I assume you have reported it?)

Strange, in my case it doesn't ... Can you give a link to a webpage
where flash video keeps playing despite of switching off all plugins
via quick prefs? I tried Youtube and other flash websites but maybe it
is different for the 10.01 64bit version which I am using?

But, I cannot replicate the observation!!

Disabling "Plugins" in "Quick Preferences" now works perfectly.

And I have also discovered that with my (updated) Flash Player, the
"playing of the individual flashes" can be disable by opening the
"drop-down menu for the flash" (right-clicking the mouse on it) and
disabling "play" and "loop". Since this has to be done for each
distracting entry, it is an annoyance; but not serious.

I apologise for wasting the time of the readers of my previous posting.
