That's normal behaviour on linux, where the middle mouse button defaults
to pasting. Shift + click on an empty part of a page and set the
appropriate option for panning.

thank you for the hint. In case someone goggles for this: It is shifht +
middle click.

Is there a way to make the pointer snap to the middle of the page when
scrolling is enabled, like it used to?
No, except for your own hand holding the mouse.
