I upgraded to 9.51. And now Opera is not usable.
It starts and never shows itself.

Process Explorer (by Mark Russinovich)
shows Opera loads CPU up to 100%, shuffling all the way
2 opera/mail/omail...dat files.

Was mail working properly for you in 9.50?

Note there is only one file called omailbase.dat, so I don't know you mean
with 'shuffling'.

most certainly yes

during start-up Opera opens 2 omail.. dat files. Unfortunately Process Explorer shows
_short_ filenames. One of the files is omailbase.dat-j.

Try a system restart... I just saw a bug report about a HP printer driver
interfering with Opera Mail initialization. No idea if that's related to
your issue of course.

I was able to start Opera at last, after erasing that
omailbase.dat-j file.

And what? I lost all my mail.

btw I do have a HP printer (LJ-1300), but it never gave me headaches.

Surely, you had a backup?

well, no.
Fortunately, Gmail, Hotmail work properly, as well as Outlook Express.
(Gmail more or less properly ;)

Yes, you would. You deleted part of your mail database.

I deleted file (.dat-j) that already had _zero_ length.

That's something of a miracle, then. I've used 'em enough times - HP make
great printers and *lousy* drivers.
