Opera 9.51. I've got nine tabs open, which doesn't seem particulary
excessive to me, but the memory usage is a stunning 202MB. None of the
pages have any fancy dynamic content: they're just ordinary assorted web
pages.

I've got 4G, so it doesn't really matter, but even so, it seems like a heck
of a lot.

Closed all the pages, shut down and restarted Opera, then opened up the same
nine pages again. This time the memory usage is only 89M. Perhaps there's
a leak somewhere?

With the same nine pages open in Firefox 3, memory usage is 67M.

Try disabling:

opera:config#UserPrefs|AutomaticRAMCache

...and set these:

opera:config#Cache|Document
opera:config#Cache|ECMAScript
opera:config#Cache|Figure

...to something like 30000 = 60MB

Ah! Thanks, I'll try that.

In any case, I assume Opera will release the memory when the OS requests
it - is that right?

Keep in mind that plugins, Java, and their linked libraries can also request
their own memory -- which can inflate Opera's memory usage beyond what it
allocates for documents, images, and JavaScript.
