Edit the site preferences to mask as firefox, then reload. The site
is sending junk to opera.

The funny stuff begins with 0x1fb8, which is a gzip header.
In other words, parts of the page is in plain text and
parts is gzipped. Most certainly a bug at eWeek.

Earlier today I finally succumbed to Microsoft's nagging and allowed IE8 to
install. This was then followed by a couple of other updates, including
Vista service pack, and for a while I could get nothing but garbage to
display on any page I visited on any site, including the Opera Support and
Community pages. First I tried doing the Opera Update to the newest version.
After beating my head against the wall for quite a while, going over every
single Opera setting that I can readily find in the Tools menu, I restarted
Opera and it started displaying English again.

Unfortunately, it is not displaying the pages properly.

At the Google mail page, for example, the Frame that holds the menu items
Inbox, Sent mail, etc., as well as the Chat/Contact list below that, extend
completely across the visible screen, pushing the normal wide view of the
Inbox into a narrow column that I have to scroll right to get to.

Does anyone have any suggestions, because I am at my wit's end?

No, but it reminds me of a similar problem (messed up page display), which
was caused by some program adding it's own fonts which took priority over
the previous one that was being used, the new one was causing spacing
issues.
I'm saying try changing to user mode and playing with the fonts.
