Can anyone tell me if there are any FREE general newsgroup servers??

Definitely. Do a search for Free Usenet Servers. That should bring up
several. Now if you want to read only, then you will have no problem
finding many. And of course some companies support there own like Opera
and Microsoft and I think Adobe and others as well. If you want to post
to non-commercial (Micrsoft et al) ones, your selection is much smaller
but you should be able to find some. Your ISP doesn't have any? Guess
more and more ISP's are dropping Usenet unfortunately. And you can always
post through the web though many people now filter Google Groups messages
because there are so many spammers and idiots using that service. now. So
avoid that if you can if you want any response to your messages - which is
kind of the whole point of usenet. :)

I've used Individual.net for years. They charge 10 Euro per year. They do
not do binary groups but I have never been into that anyway. Their service
is rock solid and their support is phenomenal.
