every new snapshot requires me to set the IMAP sent folder

It seems to me that every time I install a new snapshot, Opera forgot what
the IMAP sent folder was.
Does anyone else see this?
Is this necessary? It is not pleasant to see my sent mails in the Received
view, because that is the consequence.

No.

It should not be. It doesn't happen when restarting, just when
upgrading?

It certainly doesn't happen when restarting (either Opera or the computer).
I am not sure, but it seems to coincide with the installations of new
snapshots.
I will keep an eye on this when the next snapshot appears.

OK, I re-evaluated this one. And now, yes it seems to happen when
restarting Opera, but....
To be able to get mail from my IMAP account I need to be logged into a VPN
connection. If this connection is not open when Opera starts, it cannot
get to the Inbox, and Opera doesn't know its sent folder, and in the drop
down box to set the sent folder, I cannot even see its name, the drop down
box is empty.

When I start Opera and the VPN is open, and Opera can access the IMAP
account (and has checked mail at least once), in the drop down box, the
proper Sent folder name is present, but not chosen, so it is not set.

So in either case the sent folder path seems to be lost, but in one case
cannot be set again, and in the other case it can.

Interesting. So, if Opera can't access your server, the sent mailbox
is lost. That's no good. Please file a bug report.

OK, so here's the deal: the drop-down in the account settings is
populated when you connect to the server. However, the previous
setting should be retained if you don't change the drop-down. It's
still a bug, but not as bad as it originally appeared.
