Apparently the default has now been changed to 'search the page'
(the magnifying glass).
I have seen this issue too - even though google is set as the
default search in Tools -> Preferences -> Search Tab.
select 'google', click on edit, then 'Details...' and in my
case the 'use as default' is already checked.

It seems to be a random occurrence for me. I launch Opera with no pages, and
the search field is empty, except for the magnifying glass. I launched a
page, and google suddenly appeared as the default. Somehow, during surfing
sessions, google disappears, and only the magnifying glass is displayed.
Weird.

You can check whether a search engine is setas 'default' in the engine's
properties, in the Preferences. If you installed various test builds or
have been using Opera Link to sync custom search engines, something might
have been messed up by now because we changed the 'ID' system for
identifying searches between 9.5x and 9.6.

I saw this in 9.60 with search engine syncing and the usage of sessions.
The saved session that starts when I open Opera suddenly had blank
searches in all tabs that belonged to the session but the default search
engine in new tabs. So I manually chose my default search in the session
tabs and saved the session again, now everything looks fine.

My choice is checked as default

I install each new build over the last, so maybe the ID change is the issue.
I'll install a clean install and see if the problem is resolved.
If the issue is indeed installing over a previous build, I wonder how Opera
is going to handle the situation for all the users who upgrade to 9.6 by
overwriting their old installation...
Thanks. I tried your workaround, but it didn't work for the way I'm set up.
When I launch Opera I do so without any open tabs open, and I allow 'Window
with no tabs.'
If I choose to not allow windows with no tabs, it does open with my default
search engine selected.
Apparently, if I will have to either change my habits, or live with a blank
search field on opening Opera. (I hope this is my biggest issue of the
week.)
