Cool, doing a clean on placemarks now cause I completely forgot about
them, so the server might be down for a few minutes, but should be
back up in 10 minutes or so.

Hi guys, after a clean install the server is not coming up so I will
poke about with it for a bit.
There seems to be some dependencies unresolved among modules
(webcamviewer, screen sharing, and so on).
Trying a new .wonderland-server and see what happens! will keep you posted!
cheers,
José

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I ran into a problem while
trying to partition my HD to make a place for the Ubuntu server to run
from but I ended up messing up my whole HD and had to restore it from
a back up.
I have Ubuntu on its own HD now, I don't want to have to restore
anything major for a while so I figured that is just the safest way,
if I need to swap hard drives for when OWL is running that's just what
I guess I'll have to do until I learn more about what I'm doing.
ok.. Ubuntu is on its own HD, I log in and its nothing but command
line. I'm a little familiar with working with DOS commands but this is
a differant, I found some cheat sheets for commands but it hasn't been
overly helpful.
I thought I had it figured out when I put Gnome 3 on a disk, ran it,
and had a GUI running. I was able to access the internet but I had
some problems completing file downloads. I tried to download
OpenWonderland but the download keeps stopping.
Then I had another idea.. I could put open Wonderland on an external
drive plug it in and move it over.
Well, It detected the drive, let me view whats inside, but it will not
allow me to move files anywhere.
Ok, I lied, it lets me move files from the external to some of the
directories like "Home"and "Documents"
I try to mount the 18GB HD, it does, I can see the files and explore.
Then I try to move a simple .txt file from the external to the 18GB HD
and dragging does nothing, there is no paste option.. etc.
I have a feeling its because I don't have the permissions set up but I
just put the disk with Gnome in and it loads the GUI so I don't see
how I'm supposed to switch users to be recognised as the systems owner
to be able to access the internet, get open wonderland, download it to
the server along with whatever JAVA version I need (I think I heard
folks were having problems with Java 7 on here, should I get 6?)
I've been racking my brain on this, I really want to set up a Open
Wonderland Server, I think I'm getting closer.
Do you have any experience with Gnome 3? Maybe you know how to solve
my permissions problem, then I'd be able to put files on the 18GB HD,
take the gnome CD out, and run open wonderland just as a server.
Thanks for the help.

this is more a Linux question than Gnome 3 one. The safest way format it
with fat32, but you only need to copy from the external HD to your home to
have wonderland.jar in the seam disk.
Anyway I recomend you to post Linux related questions in Linux forums you
will get a lot better response

You should have a gui-login screen from the get-go, unless you picked the server version to install. There is little difference from a standard Ubuntu install and a server install, except a LOT of useful graphical stuff that you need, especially coming from a Win environment. The server version is meant to be just that, a plain jane server box that you keep in a closet doing the same thing over and over again. Many servers never see a keyboard, a monitor or a mouse. They don't have video DVD's run on them, nor mp3's.
You want a full ubuntu desktop install. I think you'll find that more acceptable. I use XFCE desktop for my own use. I prefer it to gnome/unity. Ric

I figured since I am trying to set up a configuration on my computer
for being an Open Wonderland server I woest javauld get the server
route, but although it does take me back to when I was working on an 8
baud modem and nothing but dos command lines, telnet, books of
jibberish and towers of floppys, I am not finding very fruitful
towards my desired goal haha.
Ok, I'm going to get the ubuntu desktop, burn an iso, slap it in the
cdrom, restart and hope it brings up an install screen, if that don't
work i'll format it to get the server version off of it and then try
it again.
Then I'll get the latest java, download open wonderland, and from
there do I just click and pray or will I have to use the terminal? If
terminal, what command should I try. I'm still going to make a
youtube tutorial video on my experiences on setting this up because I
think a lot ofpeople would want to set this up if they knew how. I
also want to include some of the advice and pitfalls I've ran into
will be in there so I appreciate any tips you might want me to
include.

You need to install ant, too. If you wish to compile against the source code of the nightly builds. And svn too. But you'll be MUCH happier with a full gui I assure you. Pure command line can be heaven if you know what you're doing or pure hell if you don't. I've been at this for almost 15 years running Linux and I still prefer a gui desktop. Ric

http://linuxcounter.net/user/44256.html
but I couldn't figure out or locate helpful documentation sooo... I
got ant by using:
sudo apt-get install ant
Verified Ant Install: $ ant -version
--Results--
(1) Unable to locate tools.jar. Expected to find it in /usr/lib/jvm/
java-7-openjdk-i386/lib/tools.jar
Apache Ant(TM) version 1.8.2 compiled on December 3 2011
-------------
( I'm a little worried about the "Unable to locate tools.jar. Expected
to find it in /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/lib/tools.jar" and hope
it doesn't come back to haunt me. If you have a fix for this please
share.)
------------
I then figured I'd give it a whack, I might be jumping the gun but
lets see what else I need..
I have Wonderland.Jar, I have a Linux system (Ubuntu), I have Java 7,
I have Apache Ant. What else do I need.. let's try to run the
program.
Some quick Google search for running Open Wonderland on Ubuntu gave me
this page:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Wonderland web server started successfully.
Log files are in /home/titband/.wonderland-server/0.5/log
Web server running on http://127.0.0.1:8080/ -----------------------------------------------------------
Ok.. sweet.. it did productive stuff.. now lets go to http://http://127.0.0.1:8080/ and see if we can log in locally.
Ok.. so here is where I leave off before I start smacking away at it
again tomorrow.
maybe you folks have some advice or tips...
Will this "Unable to locate tools.jar. Expected to find it in /usr/
lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/lib/tools.jar" come back to haunt me? How
do I fix that?
Does the JDK7 have the Java web start or is that Java6 only? Will I
have to install 6 then 7 or just forget 6? So I need the Java web
start? Something tells me I do since I had to get it when I was trying
to do this on windows.
For most installations, there's no need to configure the Wonderland
software, but if you have properties you would like to change, you can
add them at the command line. For example:
Or you can pass in a properties file as an argument:
java -jar Wonderland.jar my.run.properties
--------------------
It could just be the fatigue kicking in but are these 2 command lines
all I need to get this server on-line? I know there is the dynamic
DNS forwarding (if thats the correct term) to let non-local visitors
get in but umm.. yeah.. Please let me know what is next.
The irony will probably kick in later when it works but it runs slow
for everyone until I update my graphics card to something more
professional. Oh well, if thats what I need to make it work right I'll
put it on my list of things I need to get.

Install the alternatives-gtk package using synaptic... not exactly sure the package name so just search on alternatives. Then run it. It'll show all of it's system settings and chances are some java options are still set to OpenJTk. 0n each on you find, click on add and then go into your /usr/lib/jvm directory where you should have Java-7-oracle installed. Use same / same on each link you find broken. If it's /usr/lib/jvm/openjdk/bin/java then the link you would want to set is /usr/lib/jvm/java-jdk-7/bin/java ...the same all the way through each alternative setting. After I did this I went back and deleted all open-jdk links.
Just to make sure they don't creep back. As long as you follow the instructions completely on the OWL how-tos, you should be good to go. The repo method of installing Oracle Java has been working on and off lately, at least for me. Ric

I've downloaded the Synaptic 0.75.9 Package Manager from the Ubuntu
Software center. Odd how when I tried installing it from a DEB file I
got dependancy errors and such but whatever, I have Synaptic now.
---
I'm not sure what you mean by installing the alternatives-gtk, I dont
see anything labled alternatives-gtk, I use Synaptic to search for
"alternatives" and I don't get anything.
What I'm hoping you mean is to install these unclicked ant things. I
installed them all now, and even reinstalled the ones that were
checked.
------
I also noticed I had my java installed in the /usr/lib/ directory and
not the /usr/lib/jvm/ folder, I moved it over now though.
I see a bunch of open javajdk stuff, is it safe to just trash them to
stop ant from trying to look for open JDK like it does when I do:
Verified Ant Install: $ ant -version
--Results--
Unable to locate tools.jar. Expected to find it in /usr/lib/jvm/
java-7-openjdk-i386/lib/tools.jar
Apache Ant(TM) version 1.8.2 compiled on December 3 2011
------------
I'm not sure what you wanted me to run.. I ran the "Synaptic Package
Manager "
I'm not sure what you mean by installing the alternatives-gtk, I dont
see anything labled alternatives-gtk, I use Synaptic to search for
"alternatives" and I don't get anything. Which alternatives do you
mean? Ant, Java, Ubuntu. Am I looking for alternatives for java web
start? I see that there is an openjava 6 and a 7 in the java folder,
should I get Java 6 and 7 for the java web start thing? Anyway, like I
said earlier, I have all the "Ant" options selected in "Java
Programming Language" using "Synaptic".
You said "Then run it. It'll show all of it's system settings and
chances are some java options are still set to OpenJTk."
I'm not sure what you wanted me to run.. I ran the "Synaptic Package
Manager hoping to maybe right click on some programs and be like "ah
hah.. it says its trying to go to open jdk, let me just redirect it"
but I dont see any options for me to add anything. I must be
misunderstanding something, but I think you are correct about programs
calling on OpenJDK because.. again:
Verified Ant Install: $ ant -version
--Results--
Unable to locate tools.jar. Expected to find it in /usr/lib/jvm/
java-7-openjdk-i386/lib/tools.jar
Apache Ant(TM) version 1.8.2 compiled on December 3 2011

So for now, I am unable to follow your instructions of:
"0n each on you find, click on add and then go into your
/usr/lib/jvm directory where you should have Java-7-oracle installed.
Use same / same on each link you find broken. If it's
/usr/lib/jvm/openjdk/bin/java then the link you would want to set is
/usr/lib/jvm/java-jdk-7/bin/java ...the same all the way through each
alternative setting."
I'm going to sit here and stare at it and ponder for a bit and see if
I can figure out what you mean. I'll also fiddle with open wonderland
to and see whats going on with that since I moved my Java folder. The
help is appreciated.

This is just something I'm trying to mess with to get my java stuff
back on track because of the previous issue of the Verified Ant
Install: $ ant -version
--Results--
Unable to locate tools.jar. Expected to find it in /usr/lib/jvm/
java-7-openjdk-i386/lib/tools.jar
Apache Ant(TM) version 1.8.2 compiled on December 3 2011

titband@JerDT3000:~$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/javac

lib/jdk1.7.0_05/bin/javac
/usr/lib/jdk1.7.0_05/ has been moved to /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_05/ I
didn't delete /usr/lib/jdk1.7.0_05/ yet because I haven't figured out
how to correct the paths of the programs so that they access the right
stuff at the right place. Tips on how to perform the path correcting
functions would be great since I don't think looking for "correcting
file paths, Ubuntu, Linux" is going to help. I'm going to see if
maybe this Java_home in Ubuntu website will help me tell stuff where
it is supposed to look:
I'll still fiddle with it and look around on these sites to see if I
can find people who posted similar questions and someone already
answered their question. The help is appreciated though, I can only
imagine how long this "How to set up Open Wonderland Server in Linux,
Ubuntu tutorial" video going to be. haha, I'll probably include a link
to additional documentation I found helpful.
anyway,.. back to "the toil" haha..

try galternatives. They changed the package name. But "alternatives" in the search bar should have produced it.
Since this is an OWL forum, email me privately and/or join the Ubuntu Users list. :) Ric

Do you have a chat program like yahoo messenger? I don't have it
installed right now but if you have a chat client we can connect on
there any it will probably take less time. If you just prefer private
messages on here I'll work with that.
I'll try to get that: galternatives thing as soon as I'm done with
this post.
I didn't realize this until now but my adventures of installing java 7
were probably totally fruitless since when I type: Java -version
I get:
titband@JerDT3000:~$ java -version
java version "1.7.0_03"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.1.1pre)
(7~u3-2.1.1~pre1-1ubuntu3)
OpenJDK Client VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode, sharing)
so yeah... hah// I'll send you a private message with my differant
contact infos.

I know we are sending this into private message soon but I just wanted
to finish my posting for the day on this by saying I used the
"GAlternatives" program and it let me switch paths. I went through the
whole list and every time I saw something trying to link to open Java
I switched its path to its (what i figured was its) java 7 equivalent.
I may have gone a bit too change happy because when I go to terminal I
get this:
I'm going to work on this later but I found this page and although
folks in the comment section say the information is wrong, some offer
their solutions.
