I'm trying to make some cool 3d environments and communities for my
band ( Tortured In Toyland ) and other bands, so if your good at this
3D thing maybe we can network, email me at: titb...@gmail.com
and i'm getting the black screen. I'll post the error log.
I also am curious if after I press the "launch" button if it is
supposed to take me to the page I launched it from because it is not.
There is nothing in the URL bar.. unless I run a server and join in
from the computer I'm hosting from.
I would also like to know if it wouild be possible to make a module
where people can have weapons and do damage to each other and when
they die they die and reload after a little while.
Anyway... email me if you want to collaborate and network and link
sites and such..

Same error here when I try the OWL public server. Black screen, nothing in the URL bar. Works fine locally. Java 7 again. Ric

Are you saying it's a problem with using Java 7? Well, I guess I can
make older versions of java needed, or whatever other special stuff
visitors will need available to people I invite for events but it does
add to the hassle a bit. People don't want to have to download a lot
of extra stuff to get rolling.

I've just realised your server is on a 192.168.X.X ip range.
that range is for your internal network use only. You will need a
public IP address if you want to run a server on the internet.

which indicates that your system has opengl version 1.2. 2.0 or greater is
required if I remember correctly. This usually indicates that you need to
install more up to date video drivers.
Am I correct. Its been a while since I dealt with this.

Hey Morris, I think 1.2 should be enough although the quality would be
sluggish, but there's something wrong with owf2 right now (probably
that it hasn't been updated in ages!). I cannot login myself, but I
can log in to owf1. Will ask Jon and Nicole if it's OK to restart it.
In any case, Morris' advice is totally recommended even if 1.2 is
enough (which I'm not a 100% sure!)
cheers,
José

1. the issues with Java 7 have to do with duplicate entries in a few jar
files. These are known and fixed, but it appears some old versions of
modules are still floating around. In particular, the subsnapshot module in
the module warehouse seems to have the problem.
2. owf2 is very old. It definitely needs a full update, but I don't know
when that is likely to happen.
3. the OpenGL checks at the beginning of the error log are not totally
reliable. For example, my ATI card reports OpenGL version 1.2 only, even
though it actually support OpenGL 4.0. We use a bunch of different checks
to try to get the best graphics that are *actually* supported by a given
card. All that said, the error report indicates an Intel 865G graphics
card, which apparently performed poorly when it was reviewed in 2003:

I didn't do a search yet but just for the sake of making it easier for
more users trying to fix things.. do you have a link or something
for creating a public IP address? All I'm doing so far is just
starting it off like this:

If my graphics card is not good enough, why am I able to connect to a
wonderland that I'm hosting?
Is there a page or a program or something available that checks the
computers system and tells you if your system is able to run or
participate in a wonderland evnironment? It would be nice if it would
say "You need to update this driver, here's a link to one that will
work." or "You need more ram" or Java or some kind of windows
framework or whatever it needs? I'd like to make it as easy as
possible for visitors to get what they need to participate in the 3d
world.

Well you need a static IP or subscribe to one of those dyndns outfits that will direct users to your dynamic IP address. Plus, you will need the Server Edition of Windows to legitimately serve to the net. And a license, etc. Then you configure your OWL server to serve to the dyndns service that you could use or the static IP address. Some basic Networking Skills research would be helpful. You are setting up a networked server. Of, you might consider a hosted server. Several have been mentioned in this forum. Google will drag up those threads. Have fun! Ric

Is it easier to serve from a Linux environment? If I serve on a linux
machine visitors can visit using Mac or Windows right? That is
probably going to be the best way to go.
Do you know of anyone having success with running a cooperative linux
environment in windows xp and serving through the linux?

Ah... you'll be breaking your "User Contract" and be wide open for civil penalties. Best purchase your Server Edition first. Ric

Running Linux via Windows would still require a Win Server Edition.
You'd be better served using Linux on it's own partition and just running that cleanly. Keep in mind that even LinkedIn got busted wide open. OWL is not an application. It is a server. So, you need to have a basic understanding not only of networking, but networking security as well.
I'm not concerned with security issues at the moment at all, as I do not run OWL facing the Internet. Nor is OWL out of Beta yet, so security issues are on the back burner, unless you have a devel team to work on that in-house ...as do the Universities, etc. I'd suggest just having fun with it, for now, and do your basic housekeeping and building local for now. No one will have the time to spare to individually teach you. I'm still learning myself ...and I wouldn't put my machine at-risk by facing the Internet for anything. Have fun, enjoy. Ric

What Linux distribution or build version is the OWL1 using. I'm just
now realizing there are so many versions. I guess to get partitioning
I would tell my Bootup setup to boot from the CD drive first then have
a disk with a burned ISO of that Linux ( if thats what its using ) and
then it would ask me about creating and installing to a new partition
right? I'll watch those videos right now.
I also saw something about if I go Linux I will need to get JDK6 not
JDK7 because there is some incompatibility issues using shared
applications or something like that.
I'm going to be setting up a partition so it doesn't matter to me what
kind of set up I'd need ( as long as its freeish ). What would be a
check list of everything I'd need to set up OWL optimally. I'm just
curious because if there are so many distributions of linux platforms
I'm not sure which version wonderland wants to operate best with.
How many people can this handle at a time? I think I read somebody
saying something like 60 to 70 people? That would be nuts with the
voice chat.
