Does somebody know why the audio card of a given laptop generates background noise in OWL, but does not generate it with Skype or with other software like BBB (uses TCP) ? More importantly any hint to correct this would be much appreciated !

Is it a Windows or a Mac laptop? Is the laptop new?
Wonderland includes some native code related to audio, so as we've been discussing with the Mac situation, it might be that our native audio code is in need of some updating to deal with more recent changes in audio hardware, audio drivers or operating system updates. I don't know enough about the native code to know which factors make a difference.

This is a 2-years old Win 7 laptop, which is working very well for OWL graphics, but always generating noise in-world with OWL, using the USB headset which is actually used by OWL.
The laptop did not have any recent changes regarding audio hardware or drivers, as far as I know.

Here is the test I did: on that Win 7 laptop, I put on my headset and connected to an OWL server.
The noise was there (recorded on the OWL audiorecorder).
I ran the JavaSoundDemo, recorded something there a bit and played that recording: the noise was there too.
Then I talked in OWL and recorded: the noise has disappeared.
Then I recorded again in JavaSoundDemo: the noise has disappeared there too.
How do you explain that playing that demo could fix the background noise ?
Thanks for the trick, I hope the fix will last forever.

In Linux, it edits the config file for you in the ~/.java folder for what it deems to be correct, settings-wise. Not sure WHERE it writes it in windows, but does same I suppose.
I also directly run the softphone.jar file afterwards to test. Between the two, they seem to resolve audio problems before I ever login to OWL. Funny that the sound demo was created for java 2. I hope that helps. Ric

Yesterday the audio was good in the VW, but suddenly it started again to be bad with lots of noise generated in-world, though myself I did not hear them.
I wonder whether there can be a away to make these changes permanent ?
