problems viewing characters

I am using LeopardVanilla 0.8.0.3 on a MacBook running Leopard 10.5.4.
I am learning Mandarin and use pinyin to simplified Chinese to type in
Chinese. However, the character options that appear after typing the
pinyin appear as white text on a very light gray background, so they
are extremely hard to see, even when I change the angle of my screen.
I don't have this problem on my computers running older versions of
OS10 and OpenVanilla (the characters are black on a gray background).
Any ideas how to fix this?
