Dear All,

Greetings!

May I ask two questions about applying Local and Global Moran’s I.

(1) Is the range [-1,1] or (-1,1), or else?

(2) what the difference in between permutation test or asymptotic test for the significance of the result? Does Geoda use the former or the latter?

Thank you very much and if there are references to further drive my reading would be highly appreciated.

Hi Patrick,

Please see these previous posts:

On Moran's I -1/+1 bounds:

On OpenGeoDa uses a permutation approach:

For differences between the permutation and analytical approach, please see:

Hi Julia.
I follow you all from Berkeley!. Happy New Year.
I am starting to build space-time matrices, so probably I'll start with your
program soon. Is there any new version?.
Can I use it?. Thanks,
Paloma Taltavull

Hi there

Besides the original Moran's proposal (1948 - The interpretation of statistical maps. Journal of the Royal Statistical Society B, 10, 54-62) I also suggest to check Cliff and Ord (1973 - Spatial Autocorrelation. Pion, London), for specifics on Moran's I. And also LISA papers from Dr. Luc Anselin (for example, 1995 - "Local indicators of spatial association – LISA". Geographical Analysis, 27, 93-115).

Anyway If I remember correctly Moran's I is not exactly constrained to lie in the (-1,1) range, although you can use a theoretical bound for I as a denominator and hence force it to the (-1,1) range. Also, most of the literature emphasizes that this is not likely to present a practical problem in real life data sets with "well behaved" proximity matrices.

Regards

Gaston
