The JavaScript window.external.AddSearchProvider() API was added to
the WhatWG HTML living standard specification (2011-05-16):
http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/multipage/timers.html#the-external-interface

The link type search is covered by the HTML5 Last Call draft:
http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec-LC/links.html#link-type-search

Thanks for forwarding, I had missed that.

Anyone know if that's supported by anything other than FF and IE?

Chrome 11 (current stable version) supports AddSearchProvider:
It results in a popup, where I can define the "keyword" for uses in
Chrome's "omnibox". Ideally that could be populated with the short
title as found in the OSDD, but adding a keyword manually is good
enough for my purposes.

Cheers,
Frank
